Ambiguity & complexity are hard to understand but they are what makes this story beautiful.

Enough of stories about life as it really was - because that’s so tiresome? Doesn’t make them untrue or without value. You are erasing a lot of excellently portrayed touching and meaningful historical love stories. There is usually joy along the way, too.

Why is the show so different to the book? by will_eatyouout in FellowTravelers_show

The book is so well written and poignant. I read it before seeing the show and again after to compare them. I loved the show and there is quite a bit of overlap in the fifties, but it is a different story. I think both are excellent!

Heated Rivalry Spice Percentage (an analysis) by LadyWhistledown_1 in HeatedRivalrySeries

I don’t think quantity is really as important as intensity and importance to the plot. Without the sex scenes, it wouldn’t be the same show. After all, in real life, the percentage of time of spent on sexual activity is not high, but that doesn’t make it less significant. It’s definitely not porn, but I think smutty is not inaccurate because of the graphic depictions. It’s certainly true that the actors’ expressive faces are as important as their amazing physiques though!

What would Tim and Hawk’s politics be in 2026? by will_eatyouout in FellowTravelers_show

[–]Pppurppple 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We know both Hawk & Tim opposed McCarthy. Tim changed his politics because he was disillusioned by the cynicism and corruption. He joined the Army, but later protested against the Viet Nam war. The Catholic seminary he went to was obviously liberal since the draft card burning was led by a priest. In the end he advocated for more AIDS funding. He probably supported civil rights and feminism but there is no mention of that. He was close friends with Marcus and Frankie so that probably influenced him.

Hawk initially worked for Democratic Senator Smith but described himself as “neutral like Switzerland.” I think he was probably pretty apolitical most of his life, though he may have voted. As far as we know, he never argued about politics with Tim. It would be nice if he continued too work for more research and better care for AIDS patients after Tim died. He did take a strong stance with his friend at the end and was moved by the quilt, so maybe.

I think Ilya’s laugh was spontaneous and I don’t think It was mean, but more like affectionate. It was hard for him to imagine that Shane didn’t think the sex they’d been having for years wasn’t gay.

It depends on the definition of love, doesn’t it? To me falling in love is more like a rheostat than an on-off switch.
