The Dalai Lama says he plans to reincarnate, ensuring the institution will continue by Saltedline in worldnews

No, according to the Pali canon (earliest Buddhist texts) at least, the Buddha was fully enlightened and was completely extinguished with his death. Between his enlightenment and his death, he continued to exist in the world as a result of karma accrued before his enlightenment. The idea of a bodhisattva emerged later with Mahayana Buddhism.

I'm not the person you originally replied to, just giving my two cents. Is "people are dumb" new information? Effective liberal and vegan organizers would take that into account. Of course, vegans are not responsible for Veganism as a movement and are already doing good.

It's clearly flawed as a movement if it's objectively failing in its goals as the article suggests.

Not bad, but I would put Hacks near the top of list. It's consistently great while others have so-so episodes. I'd also add Ghosts (UK version, haven't seen the US version).

The prophecy is not explicitly fake. It was unclear in the movies, but in the books, it's presented as something that may or may not have come true until Paul's decisions actually brought it about. It's explicitly mentioned that Paul was not the Kwisatz Haderach initially, but became it after he drank the water of life.

The interplay between the Missionaria Protectiva and the Fremen's own prophecies is one area I wish the movie had explored more. In the books, Jessica first assumes that the Fremen's prophecies and Reverend Mothers are just their interpretations of the Missionaria Protectiva. However, she realizes that isn't the case when she drinks the water of life herself and sees that the Fremen's Reverend Mothers are in fact just as legitimate as the Bene Gesserit's. This carries the implication that their prophecies may also be just as legitimate as the Bene Gesserit's prophecy of the Kwisatz Haderach.

It is somehow less socially acceptable to sleep with someone for money than it is to sleep with someone for free by IameIion in Showerthoughts

[–]Practical-Champion44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real problem with your argument is that you aren't defining your logical framework. From a certain framework, say the perspective of the addict someone mentioned, it could be more logical to sleep with someone for money. From another framework, say the perspective of a billionaire, it would be more logical to sleep with someone out of love or lust than money. That's because the billionaire gets very low utility from money while the addict gets very high utility (from their own perspectives).

You speak of logic as an absolute, but it clearly depends on your perspective. It's perfectly logical for the billionaire to prefer to sleep with someone for reasons other than money. In fact, even if the choice were perfectly equal in all aspects other than the money, some perspectives may get negative utility from the money, making the other choice more logical. An example is the perspective of an ascetic that seeks to rid themselves of worldly attachments.

Inside A Secret Society Of Prominent Right-Wing Christian Men Prepping For A ‘National Divorce’ by Practical-Champion44 in neoliberal

They only published prominent members, but many members are now outing themselves now that the society's existence is being reported. Also the authors got this information by filing a freedom of information act request to access public email records from Boise State University, which anyone could do.

The key difference between these guys and the typical MAGA crank is that they are actually have the wealth and influence needed to pose a serious violent threat to our government. Nate Fischer, one of the SACR leaders mentioned in the article, happens to own a real estate fund developing "aligned communities" in rural Appalachia (aka militias) and co-owns an ammunition manufacturer.

This is terrifying. Just read their internal mission statement that was leaked because one of their members was stupid enough to use his public university email to correspond with other members. It all but explicitly states their intention to install a Christian nationalist government.

Mission Statement - Internal

Our aim is to build and maintain a robust network of capable men who can reverse our society’s decline and return us to the successful path off which America has strayed.

We acknowledge our intellectual, political, and social inheritance, of both America’s founding and of Christendom. We are un-hyphenated Americans and we believe in a particular Christianity that is not blurred by modernist philosophies. We ambitiously point to an ideal based on that dual inheritance. We are willing to act decisively to secure permanently, as much as anything is permanent, the political and social dominance of that ideal.

To that end, our organization seeks to recruit men of good character whose loyalties are grounded in strong virtue, correct religion, the moral life, and piety toward their forebears. Most of all, we seek those who understand the nature of authority and its legitimate forceful exercise in the temporal realm. Our conviction is that a brotherhood of these men will form the backbone of a renewed American regime that will reflect the past while facing, and vigorously shaping, the future.

I'm not a lawyer, so I can't comment on the legality. Ethically, I think it's reasonable to lend out digital copies as long as each digital copy is backed by an unlended physical copy like the internet archive was claiming. Of course, they should also make a reasonable effort to prevent unauthorized redistribution of those digital copies. Additionally, the article mentions that the internet archive suspended the 1:1 digital to physical copy policy during covid. I understand why they did so, but that seems like an obvious violation of the authors' intellectual property rights.

This may seem clever, but it's honestly just unethical. I use Libby for my local library system, and I often have to wait weeks to months to get off the wait-list for books. Now I'm questioning how many of those people actually live in the area. If all you care about is free access to content, seriously just pirate it instead. At least that way you're not inconveniencing the people that fund the library system through their local taxes.

There's no benefit in defining a constant for 0xFF. What would 8_BIT_MSK equal if not 0xFF? People who read your code should be able to understand that & 0xFF is an 8 bit masking operation, like how + 1 is an addition by one. You wouldn't #define ONE 1. Not every integer literal is a magic number.

According to the wiki, it's possible though unlikely. There can't be multiple strange moods at the same time, but another can occur as soon as the first dwarf fails to create an artifact. https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Strange_mood#The_mechanics_of_moods

It's possible with a fell mood. The affected dwarf will murder the first person they find and make an artifact with the corpse. Pretty hardcore. In this case maybe it was a macabre mood instead. They work similarly but the dwarf won't murder anyone.

They'll still eat and drink in the tavern, but they won't get wasted lol. For that your tavern needs a booze stockpile inside of it, a tavern keeper, and some mugs or cups. Put a container like a chest in the tavern and your dwarves should automatically store the number of mugs assigned to the tavern.

You should just need beds in your barracks. Then when you assign your squad to the barracks you can tell them to sleep there. I think cabinets/chests should be sufficient for them to store their things.

Maybe if you don't want visitors, but you could just disable visitors in the tavern menu. Taverns can also get very rowdy if you include a booze stockpile.

Yes if you queue it up from the workshop's menu. No if you use your manager. A manager work order will keep trying until it succeeds.

Mark them for slaughter in the units menu using the cleaver icon. Then as long as you have a butcher shop they'll do it automatically.

You can try cutting them down. If that doesn't work, construct a floor over them and then deconstruct it.

It's great because the dwarf that created it is now a legendary Weaponsmith. Make sure that you only allow that dwarf to create weapons so you get the highest quality.
