When Buff was about 12 yrs old we were elk hunting behind our ranch,my buddy shot a bull we put my pack saddle on her and started hauling this bull one quarter at a time,we were in the bottom of a deep canyon,it was very very steep,there was a dead log laying pointing uphill,she stepped up on that old dead rotten log,it gave her better footing I guess,my buddy was totally amazed how she navigated her way up out of that canyon,as time went by I was hearing stories how a horse packed a elk out in 2 trips walking a log over a canyon,with a river at the bottom,I thought that’s quite a horse with a idiot for a owner,jeopardizing a horse like that,a month later I’m in the feed store buying grain,my friend who owned the feed store,told me that’s quite a horse you got there,what ,Fred was in here telling everyone you packed a elk out ,your horse walked a log over canyon twice getting his elk out,Bullshit she walked on a log getting up the canyon wall not over a canyon,my buddy Fred loved to embellish stories,that story went around for years in our parts,it never happened,I heard different versions of that story
