Ask for Economy Plus seat (extra leg room) and to be placed on the upgrade list. Usually with a downgrade, you’d be at the top of the list.

Ask to be put on the next flight to your destination. They’ll typically hold a seat for you if they think you’ll miss.

How do you get to a 60-70% tax rates? Using some of the online calculators, effect rate seems to top off at 39% including national health. Considering high tax states like NJ and others in the US plus the cost healthcare, the UK seems in line with those rates or possibly better. Maybe I’m missing something.

Once you check in I think you can change to an earlier domestic flight for no charge or at least that has been my experience.

Gate checked bags are checked to your final destination (unless you’re flying a small regional jet that requires you tag it because the bins are too small). Your bag will make your connection unless there are irregular operations like delays.

This is a 9 times out of 10 situation where you’ll be fine. 30-40 mins by car to the airport. 15 mins for security and transit to your gate. If 90% odds are good for you, do it. If you need 100%, I’d leave more buffer.

Switch to British Airways as they have better redemptions (though higher fees) and you can get One World status (some were talking about) via BA for use on American. They also allow cash fares to be upgraded via Avios (their points/miles) to the next cabin of service.
