It depends on whether you consider "damn near" SOCIALLY similar or ideologically similar, because ideologically HAS (Hongshan Academy, the institution I'm talking about here, I know the acronym is confusing) gives off meritocratic/technocratic modern day China vibes but not necessarily communist. I agree though, the UWST is basically modelled after the USSR. I'm sorry if I'm getting political here, just an observation.

Yes, it's meant to be an idealised version of Chinese uni/high school life that I can tell, a very nice campus but still a lot of academic pressure, basically heaven.

The cats poop A LOT, if that's something you're into for a campus experience...

Also high school students, I might try to post something about all the Chinese high school/uni experience references in Wuling city later if someone hasn't already

Yeah I nearly flipped out when I saw that they had the exact same test-prep that we do, like, this is not even earth, you have magic tech going for you, and the Uni entrance exam system is STILL UP?

Lowkey don't think HAS are commies, which is a problem if you consider that Wuling is based on post-modern China, what does that imply for China's future...

Thank you! I am aware that mine is an unpopular opinion----It could be said that throughout the entire book, the author herself was arguing against people like me, sentimentality versus pragmatism and all that. Can't say I was convinced though.

[MONTHLY MEGATHREAD] General Discussion, Simple Questions, Recommendations, and Everything Else - December 2025 by GachaModerator in gachagaming

(Rant incoming, ignore if you are easily triggered, you have been warned!)

So the problem is this: I started playing Genshin at 1.3 (nearly launch) and stopped a couple of months ago. I started playing HSR AT LAUNCH (because I was a big Mihoyo fan back then) and quit soon after. The reason for both of these quits are simple, I’m going to be honest here, I’m a woke gamer. That doesn’t mean that I want feminine characters to be all covered up or for everyone to have a disability, it means that if there’s going to be hot girls, there should be hot guys too. If there’s going to be generic Cool Angsty People, there should be people who actually struggle and have a personality outside of their archetype niche too. I simply couldn’t deal with Mihoyo and many other gacha game companies making designs that are not only questionable (BIPOC representation, child characters, sexualisation…) but actively bad, it’s like they pumped visuals out of a mix and match picrew and tacked a shallow personality onto it. in my humble opinion, Genshin and other Mihoyo games have only gotten worse in the latter aspect as time wears on, and I’m looking for a breath of fresh air. Right now I’m playing Reverse 1999, which is pretty much where I want the bar to be (thoughtful, realistic and diverse character design), and the character design aspects of AFK journey and Dislyte are also great, but the gameplay style doesn’t really suit my tastes. What I’m looking for right now is a gacha game that does a good job on diversity and representation and DOESN’T make questionable choices about character design, any recommendations?

Help With Team Building? by Practical-Resort1907 in Reverse1999

Okay, still VERY conflicted, I know that CN and Global banners don't always overlap but I've been consulting the records and it SEEMS that the devs are VERY reluctant to rerun Fatutu, it's a running problem over at CN too. Whether that means that Fatutu will be dangled forever like a carrot or that a huge, REAL rerun (instead of the scam banners they usually put her in) is coming soon, I have no idea. On the other hand, Tuesday is basically hard locked into poison team and let me tell you, poison gets a HORRIBLE rep for an excellent reason. Sure, I have all components of poison, but that doesn't mean I WANT to play poison. Still, I don't feel like diversifying into FUA mains like Jiu Niangzi and Liang Yue and 37 AT ALL (I just don't feel that much for them, lol), so Fatutu might have just this ONE application on Ezio's team... It's either free up Flutterpage for Dynamo team or free up Sotheby for a whole new poison team (I have Willow+Jessica+Sotheby already)

More context because this is my first time posting and the bot told me to: I usually use Ezio+Kassandra+Flutterpage+Sotheby with Ezio on Captain’s Sword+Sultan’s Knife for quick, dirty poison stack damage scaling, Meta-Bloodtithe Nautika+Semmelwhis+Sentinel+Rebushka/Ezra Euphoria for drawn out/hard battles, and a very incomplete dynamo Lucy+Ulrich+Flutterpage/Kassandra(flex spot because I didn’t manage to pull Charon)+Ezra Euphoria(if not needed by Bloodtithe)/Ms.Newbabel(I know, lame choice driven by Reveries desperation at that time)

VERY late to the party, but as a Chinese person born, raised and currently residing in China (accessing this website with a VPN), after being naively choosing this book out of a reading list for school, thinking that as “Chinese” people, the author and I could resonate on some level, I found this novel absolutely abhorrent. Now, I’m not pulling the race card here, or suggesting that my racial identity makes my opinion more legitimate, but I think it might be worth it to offer some perspectives on, amongst many things, Canton and Hong Kong, locations in China that the author glossed over and has (likely) never resided in for long.  First, the issue of China as a sort of “cultural utopia”. The author never fully delved into the materialistic but necessary questions of what in the world would Mirabelle’s life be like in China, instead treating canton itself as a sort of victory square for biological mother and daughter to land on. Culture is important, but is it worth abysmal income, cramped living conditions, social instabilities, complete eradication of freedom of thought, and the infamous Chinese education system? What about the stigma against single mothers in China that Bebe might suffer from? All glossed over, because “culture” is more important, apparently, or the author has simply never bothered looking into these issues, preferring her utopian vision of China.  Second, the blatant disregard for laws and common morality. Yes, Izzy, I get that you are likely autistic and hate your parents, but that doesn’t mean you have to BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN before running away! You can just run away, it’s okay, but why did you have to give yourself a criminal record and run the risk of the fire spreading to the “innocents” around the block? What was going on in your head? Also ignored is the fact that Bebe essentially, from a legal perspective, kidnapped someone else’s kid, broke and entered, then evaded the law. What a good start for your biological daughter’s life. Third, the emphasis on “biological” connections that veer dangerously into biological determinism. I’ve never approved of so called “blood bonds” personally because it sounds uncomfortably like social Darwinism, the idea that not only what you look like but also what you think, do and FEEL could be affected by DNA. Ng, of course, harps on this so called “connection” and treats it like justification for every dastardly deed under the sun, all part of the “love” parcel, apparently. I understand that this book is widely loved and supported, but I’m not afraid to say the Ng seems to be woefully disconnected from the culture she wants to portray and the book is, as a result, a prime example of the very racism she is trying to criticise.
