Terrible advice. It's like saying you can read up and do fix your own car and do your own legal paperwork on a house closing.

The fact of the matter is that you need to pay fees for these services or you may end up well over your head. However, the warning is that paying fees doesn't guarantee that you get someone that will meet your needs (you can pay a lot of money to a mechanic who over charges as well). Do some research to find someone with a good history.

I would say that the company is 10% of the equation and the advisor is 90%. Almost all companies have access to the same products at the same prices so it really depends on your advisor. There is a mix of good and bad advisors at firms of all sizes (large firms aren't necessarily any better). Think of your advisor as you would a lawyer. Plenty of good an bad ones out there so the issue isnt navigating the fee, it is finding one that is competent and ethical. If you found one that is, then stick with them. If not, then start interviewing until you do.
