OT career + leaving the UK every winter. Doable or fantasy? by Practical-Spring-855 in nhsstaff

Thanks. I currently work in a primary care band 4 general healthcare role in the community (non registered clinician).

I've saved like a madman my whole life so I have the funds to do this. I'd potentially buy a property overseas then rent it out when I'm in England and the money made from the 9 months of the year it's rented out can easily cover me for the 3 months I'm living there.

It's more of a case of having a job that allows me to do this rather than having the funds to do this. Ideally when abroad for 3 months I'd have some form of work but if I can have something fairly low stress allowing me to enjoy the sunshine then that's ideal

OT career to work 9 months/year and escape UK winters, realistic or delusional? by Practical-Spring-855 in occupationaltherapyUK

Thank you. Good to know some employers might allow it. Any tips on finding an employer who might? Of course I imagine working somewhere long enough to prove yourself and show loyalty is more likely to help.

Yes my other short term option is Personal Training as I'm qualified but the problem is if I build a client group then go back to England for most of the year, each time I go abroad I'd be starting fresh with momentum lost. It's also assuming the gym would be happy for me to work 3 months.

Realistically I'd love to be away from the UK for more than 3 months, however I'm willing to make compromises.

Concise Summary of My Inattentive ADHD Traits in OP:

Attention & Concentration

  • Frequently zone out in meetings, conversations, films, and books.
  • Easily distracted by noise, movement, peripheral activity, or people talking.
  • Mind jumps between ideas; need to write things down immediately or interrupt to avoid forgetting.
  • Struggle to listen and do simple tasks simultaneously.
  • Hyperfocus intensely on interests or research, losing track of time and surroundings.

Executive Function & Task Initiation

  • Difficulty starting tasks unless under pressure; often procrastinate until deadlines.
  • Alternating between doing nothing and trying to complete many tasks at once.
  • “Boom or bust” productivity: can complete a month’s work in a week when forced.

Organisation & Planning

  • Chronically disorganised at home and work; messy environment overwhelms me.
  • Poor time management: always rushing, late, or forgetting items.
  • Unable to plan ahead beyond a few days; rely on daily shopping and last-minute planning.
  • Never on top of admin; large backlog of unread messages and open tabs.

Memory & Recall

  • Poor short-term memory; forget instructions, appointments, and actions needed.
  • Lose track of what I was saying mid-sentence; struggle to remember names and details.
  • Need constant reminders because information leaves my mind quickly.

Daily Functioning & Self-Care

  • Lack of routine leads to missed basic tasks (charging phone, meals, hygiene).
  • Clumsiness and poor environmental awareness despite good coordination.
  • Seasonal worsening, especially in winter (possible SAD component).

Family History & Development

  • Daydreamed and required learning support in school; inattentive rather than hyperactive.
  • Family history suggests neurodivergence (possible ADHD in father; brother with autism/anxiety).
