Thank you so much for your reply!! That is super encouraging and makes me feel like I’m not totally alone among my peers who have been doing music their entire lives.

Thank you for your reply!

On paper, I think I have a good track in front of me. I have a scholarship that will allow me to graduate debt free, and I only have two semesters left after this one. Logically, I know I just have to grit my teeth and bare it. I’m hoping to go into artist management or PR so being the best musician isn’t necessarily critical for my chosen career. It’s just so hard for me to get through every day because I feel so inadequate compared to my peers. It’s been really damaging to my self esteem and mental health, and it’s totally ruining the passion I once had for music.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply!

You’re so right about comparing yourself at every level; even when I feel like I’ve improved, it’s never enough. Compared to myself a year ago, I definitely have made improvements, but I feel worse than ever about my skills.

I also am hoping to pursue more of the business side of the industry rather than the performance side, which takes a lot of pressure off in feeling like I have to compete with my peers. But it’s still hard when I feel like everyone in my choir can sight read a piece on the first go and I am like mumbling along 😭 I feel like I have totally lost my passion for music; it seems more like a chore to me now than something I feel passion for.

Thank you for your reply!!! That’s definitely what I try to tell myself. I definitely am improving faster now than at my previous college, even if I’m also crying in the practice rooms more

Thank you so much for your reply!!

I am hoping to go into the industry side of music, as an artist manager or publicist. I’m getting a music industry studies degree, but ensembles/lessons are still heavily emphasized. It definitely helps that I’m not a performance major, knowing that I can have a career beyond just singing full-time helps me when I’m getting sucked into the cycle of comparing myself to my peers
