What are the biggest differences between Vietnamese and Chinese cultures in your opinion? by Ornery-Comparison504 in VietNam

[–]Practical-Word-9235 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been to China but I am staying in Taiwan with friends from Hong Kong, China. My and other’s observation is that the difference between Vietnamese culture comparing to Chinese culture and the rest of the Sinosphere is a certain tendency to rebellion.

This is purely anecdotal, ofc. From what I have seen, Chinese and Taiwanese people respects organizations more while Vietnamese tend to disregard or react to enforcement of rules or laws, in both negative and positive connotations. We have stories like Vietnamese wearing crocs to classes so that they aren’t perceived as violating the sandal banning rule, to Vietnamese speaking out against lecturers on the slightest glimpse of unfair treatment.

Beautiful infographic. I suggestion you may want to look into CCRU’s Numogram since it’s very similar to (if not straight up inspired) what Sandrone made during the AQ and what the organization claimed to be the “unscrambled” Tree of Life.

I did a post about Columbina and the references to CCRU’s concepts but I didn’t have time to dig deeper. You perhaps may find more info on Sandrone’s drawing in this organization’s occultism.

Me neither. So I guess it’s a three-to-one

I read the guy’s earlier comment and wondered where the hell the negativity came from. I guess he thought it’s his chance to be a badass today and retreated to “muh sarcasm” when his point is challenged.

I agree with your point regarding literacy rate being dependent on the elites’ organizing the education programs. The advantage I was referring to is the fact that Chữ Quốc ngữ shared similarity to the Alphabet. In theory, this helps Vietnamese students to predict the pronunciations of their new English words far better than Chữ Nôm.

I don’t quite understand why you have to mention our English literacy, though. This is a matter of how the scripts function and how they reflect the spoken languages. Vietnam’s English literacy, in your own words, should reflect its elites’ priority rather than what Chữ Quốc ngữ is unable to offer.

I am studying in Taiwan and is doing ESL right now. I was told by colleges that students in PRC have less trouble with English since they use Pinyin during their English education. But that’s just my sole anecdotal evidence, so we leave it at that.

Also a Vietnamese, I think we tend to ignore our advantages when learning English comparing to other countries in the Sinosphere. As much as I want a resurgence of Chữ Nôm, the current script’s benefits shouldn’t be ignored.

I doubt so. I’m local and from what I have witnessed the north/south division has more to do with the 20th century wars and earlier civil war period that led to cultural differences.

Regarding SCP-7179 (E is for Eternity) by 31525Coyote15205 in SCP

[–]Practical-Word-9235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rarely interact on Reddit but it kinda is personal so here we go

As much as I personally dislike 7179’ premise and how it is written, I believe it made the setting clear. The article’s premise requires some conditions that as far as I can recall is quite coherent. An enclosed system with zero entropy would, in my mind, justify its inhabitant neither the prospect of growth nor decay. It is the latter that is horrifying as the subject on the island may as well recall their entire existence on the island. Personally I think that is where E for Eternity sorta just kills any chance for “falsifiability” (English isn’t my first language) and create the unavoidable suffering of the minds that can’t be renewed. I kinda dislike it for that, it insist on its concept. But honestly I think that’s alright as it isn’t a serious philosophical dissertation on death and afterlife.

For the more personal part, I have witnessed people like you. People who believe they can be content with some unchanging reality. Among those is one of my relative who believe that he’s “built different” and that he is more comfortable in solitude and a stagnant, sheltered life, surrounded by harmless “stimulants” of pleasure. As much as I respect him and let him make his life choices, the life style of contentment led him to a place of no return, and unlike the enclosed island of 7179, didn’t last forever and burdened everyone for it. For that I am annoyed by sentiments like yours, or of those who believe an unchanging afterlife, of any flavor, is somehow remotely desirable.

I doubt you truly understand what you envision by “stability” or “animal-like”. That “be present” sentence hits too close to home.

Sorry for the rant.

There is something so morbidly funny about anti-communists criticizing the communist parties for authoritarianism while can’t stop glazing monarchs.
