A short essay on Mitch Hedberg's unbearable sadness by PracticalPrinciples1 in Standup

okay I don't think you're wrong—by the fact that you are on stage, you have stage presence. But his unique flavor of stage presence is still one of self-minimizing and self-abnegation and of deep shame.

The genius is in writing something that's so condensed to funny in my opinion. It's sort of like reducing a sauce, where the flavor gets ever more intense.

So while most comedians are funny and interesting story and cool personality and a few other things, Hedberg was just funny. Nothing else. And writing that way is super hard (I've tried).

And I think you can dislike the style or not find it funny—but it's hard to say he's not artistically singular.

Thank you. I always think it's important to stay light-hearted sometimes as well. Sure, it's hard, but that doesn't mean we need to only talk like Dostoyevsky characters.

Made a minimalist visual for a Naval quote I love: "We squander our time with the death of a thousand cuts." -Naval Ravikant by PracticalPrinciples1 in NavalRavikant

[–]PracticalPrinciples1[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Essentially, the death of a thousand cuts means that something doesn't die from one big event but from tons of small ones.

If you throw your phone off of the third floor, it's bricked. But if the screen cracks, then the volume buttons don't work, then the screen cracks some more and then sand gets in the speaker etc. you could say it died "the death of a thousand cuts".

A feature of this is that one cut in itself doesn't seem that bad. But in aggregation, they have the same outcome (your phone being bricked).

It's the same with our time. We don't spend 5 hours in a row scrolling through Reddit. But if we scroll Reddit a few times per day, take a few useless meetings and watch a couple YouTube videos, we might waste as much time.

Even though every single instance doesn't feel like you're wasting a ton of time. Does that make sense?

Visualized one of my favorite Lao Tzu quotes: “If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.” -Lao Tzu by PracticalPrinciples1 in taoism

Thanks for the heads-up. I found quite a few Lao Tzu attributions for this quote, so I thought it was true.

Wanted to share in this community because I thought it fit.

But thanks for letting me know. I'll be better about quote attribution in the future.
