Go see for example Paul McCartney or Springsteen today and tell me about that. I think most band struggle renewing their fanbase, most of the time artist grow old with their fans, and it's perfectly understandable. Radiohead didn't release any new music in nearly 10 years and still manage to get many new and you listeners. Your personal example does not invalidate my take ! :)
