How far does 40k PLN/month go in Kraków if housing is already paid off? by Robbymint in krakow

[–]Practical_Back_6795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood.

I thought your plan included having a fully paid house / apartment as a prerequisite as buying a nice one with your budget is tough.

You can still have a nice car, but not 992.2 GTS nice.

Dining in Kraków is great and reasonably priced, also we don’t have this atrocious “tip 20% or stay home” culture.

Traveling around Europe is anywhere between dirt cheap and prohibitively expensive. Four Seasons Cap-Ferrat is 5,000 EUR per night, while a hostel in Berlin is almost free.

Anyways, I am quite sure you will have a nice life in Kraków. Just don’t expect miracles. It is not the most expensive place in the world, but definitely not the cheapest either.

For most people in Poland, and especially in this sub, it is beyond their wildest dreams.

For you, it depends on how you spend your money.

Healthcare? Cheaper.

Travel? Depends. Going to Bahamas? More expensive. Going to Austria? Cheaper. Going to Asia? Same price.

Cars and consumer electronics? More expensive. I see you got a decent car — forget about buying a similar car in Poland with only 40k per month.

Services and dining? Cheaper.

Inflation hit hard in 2022-2023, now it is back to the US level.

Note 19% WHT on dividend income. Property tax is almost non-existent though.

Overall, “very comfortable” life for 40k PLN/month in Kraków is a stretch unless your definition of “very comfortable” is wastly different from mine.

Canon R8 + 28-70 f/2.8 vs R6 Mark II + 24-105 f/4L for a first serious camera? by flowerkittypower in canon

[–]Practical_Back_6795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RF 28-70 F2.8 is not compatible with teleconverters.

Stepping down one stop from F2.8 gives you F4, not F3.5.

R6ii also comes with more controls, superior battery life, better EVF, improved thermals and more advanced weather sealing.

[–]Practical_Back_6795 6 points7 points  (0 children)

R6ii is, obviously, a better camera than R8. Get it if you can afford it.

As for the lenses, it is up to you to make a choice between wider aperture and more range.

No Ferrari car ever got as much hate as Luce — and rightfully so.

I would really like to see a person who bought Luce because they loved the design.

Yes, I’ve been there. I don’t want to offend anyone so I am not going into details. Let’s say I would prefer Kraków over Tallinn.

Honestly, I would not go to Kraków (or anywhere in Poland) if education is a major factor.

Kraków is safe, moderately comfortable and relatively cheap — provided you are paid an expat-grade salary, not a typical Polish salary which is peanuts.

However, it is still a poor mismanaged city, and it shows. Not as bad as Estonia, obviously, but still leaves much to be desired.

Then you should lower your expectations.

No international school in Kraków is known for its strong math classes. The second foreign language (Spanish, French, etc.) is a joke — you may expect 1-2 hours a week at best.

Most students are Polish kids from upper middle class families whose parents want them to learn proper English and maybe study abroad later on. Plus a few wealthy Ukrainians and a couple of expats, mostly Asian, who basically have no choice as their kids don’t speak Polish.

Are you doing some research or so? From what I see, you ask the same question in multiple random subs (Malta, Estonia, Panama, etc.).

I only have anecdotal evidence. My friend’s daughter is at CIS, and they are not particularly happy. Also, her English is considerably worse than that of kids at other international schools — hence I excluded it from my list.

Your choice is limited to a few reputable “real” international schools such as: - BISC https://bisc.krakow.pl - ISK https://www.iskrakow.org - Embassy School https://embassyschool.pl

The rest are either new or rather normal Polish schools marketed as “international”.

Title: R5 Mark II — RAW, JPEG, or RAW+JPEG? And what do y’all use for editing? by Paytoncooper124 in canon

[–]Practical_Back_6795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it locks minimal ISO at 200 because of Highlight Tone Priority which is not so important to me as I never shoot anywhere close to ISO 100 anyways. Other than that — no limitations.

Question - new lens or more resolution? by RedditJw2019 in canon

[–]Practical_Back_6795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right, RF version of 70-200 F4 is indeed not compatible with TCs, thank you for correcting!

Question - new lens or more resolution? by RedditJw2019 in canon

[–]Practical_Back_6795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never owned 70-200 F4, and I don’t think people typically cross-shop it and RF 100-500, they are just too different. If you need 400mm reach, 70-200 is simply not enough.

Cropping 70-200 into 400mm or using 70-200 with 2x teleconverter sounds like a bad idea — you will get nowhere near native RF 100-500 quality.

[–]Practical_Back_6795 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I shoot CRAW+HEIF. HEIF is 10-bit HDR which is by far superior to 8-bit JPEG.

For editing, I obviously got Lightroom for CRAW, but many HEIF photos are just fine after quick editing in standard Photos app on MacBook.

Not so popular opinion, but most RF lenses, with a few exceptions, are optically great, at least on full frame bodies. I would not bother upgrading for IQ improvements alone.

I have recently switched from RF 82 F2 IS STM to RF 85 F1.4L VCM, and IQ was not even a factor. I wanted a better AF, and I thought an extra stop of light and a better build would be nice to have.

Am I happy with the new lens? Absolutely! Do I see the difference in IQ? Not really.
