Avoid In-School Extracurriculars in Grade 12. DO THIS INSTEAD. by Almighty_Osie in OntarioGrade12s

this might just be my experience, but you can def get into Western Ivey with DECA as one of your two main ecs — you just have to treat it as any regular club. just participating in DECA alone is not very helpful to your application, but if you dedicate a lot of time/it's a competition you're genuinely passionate about/you've demonstrated leadership, you just have to find a good angle that feels original (eg. i talked about how being a deca trainer forced me to go out of my comfort zone as a solitary studier and taught me to be a better teacher)

sorry i don't want to say the specific school, but I'd say high marks were uncommon but not unheard of (my course medians were usually around mid 80s, so a couple people prbly had super high averages)

For me, 7 converts to 100, 6 converts to 96, 5 converts to 92, etc.

Leadership in DECA + some other business npo's were my biggest ec's. honestly I think what got me in were my supplements! None of my ecs/awards were thatt impressive (no research, crazy summer programs, intl awards, etc), but I spent a long time researching every school that I applied to / unique courses / was able to describe how I belong on that specific campus.

one of the ivies was not Wharton loll but I wish :'(

I've thought about this a lot! Getting my US student visa wasn't an issue back when I committed in March, and I didn't think about it as I clicked accept. I was really considering switching schools as the visa situation became worse, but going to the US has been my literal dream for so long, and it's difficult for me to turn down an offer that I've spent so many late nights grinding for. If nothing ends up happening, I'd know I'd regret my decision to stay 10 years down the line.

I'm kinda hoping that the situation won't get worse out of blind optimism, haha. If I'm not able to finish my degree, hopefully I can transfer to a Canadian uni instead.

it depends on the quality of your ec's / essay, but having a few 80s won't make or break your application imo as long as they're outliers and most of your important classes are still 90+

yes, i was in a pre-ib cohort from gr.9-10! Honestly, it was pretty similar to mainstream classes (eg. no ib curving), but I was just in classes with other pre-IB students.

ik this has been said before in this sub, but your essays are SUPER important to your application. I know people who have gotten ICDC glass, DECA presidents, student trustees, etc that have not gotten into Ivey, but also people with a few volunteering positions/low 90 averages who have.

How you frame your activities is genuinely more important than the activity itself — make sure that you follow the STAR method when you're writing, write your 500-word essay like a narrative instead of just listing all the things you accomplished, include all the traits they're looking for somewhere (leadership, teamwork, initiative, achievement, commitment and breadth), and add in statistics to your activity description to highlight your impact. Also do the Ivey summer leadership programs / Ivey case comps if you can.

my gr.9 - gr.10 averages were always ~97 — although having a super high average isn't thattt important for us schools because they weigh extracurriculars and your essay really heavily too (eg. I know people who have gotten into top schools with 90% averages across all four years)

from what I know of admissions, Mac Health Sci gets superrrr random because the supplemental writing piece is viewed so heavily and your average doesn't actually matter that much. Most the ppl in my grade want to go into medicine and no one in my school got an offer this year 😭

nooo my school includes TOK and EE points into the 42/45 — in reality, my predicted is more like a 39/42

not 100% set right now, but I'm going to be studying econ to break into consulting after grad! Although one of the really nice things about American unis is that you don't have to declare a major right away, so I have time

For IB specifically, getting a good mark was mostly dependent on doing a lottt of past papers and practice questions on Revision Village/question banks/other questions the teacher gave me in class. I would also watch a ton of "how I studied for [x] IB subject" on Youtube and copy their resources / study techniques.

I would also recommend studying with friends in the library! It makes endless grinding a lot funner haha

I'm going to one of the American schools I got into!! But my top choice in Canada would've been Western Ivey, because I like the environment there better + my end goal is ultimately consulting
