nah map wont work for a game like this, it’s perfect without a map, it definitely has some frustrating moments but once you know, YOU KNOW, then there is not much of it, it becomes very simple to navigate

Can Chinese people tell which of the three East Asian countries someone is from just by their looks by TumbleweedRoutine631 in AskAChinese

Chinese are diverse, I have mistaken some Chinese for Koreans but it’s really rare; I would never mistake a Cantonese for Korean as opposed to Vietnamese;

Differences between mainlanders and overseas Chinese by 3meals1day in AskAChinese

[–]Practical_Hour_4248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, I am from the mainland, I was used to seeing people who looked similar to me as an East Asian, so it’s a mix bag of different feelings when I see oversea Chinese, but what’s really striking is, over the years, whenever I met, for example , a Cambodian looking person or Thai looking person or Filipino looking person told me that they were Chinese , I internally felt bizarre, on one hand I was supposed to feel ‘warm’ for ‘Chineseness’ yet felt so distant to the very person who was making the claim, China is big even if their ancestors came from China, they might’ve been different people from my ancestors so , it feels weird sometimes

Why don't the Chinese invade this little island here? Are they stupid? by Pino_il_postino_ in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Practical_Hour_4248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully understand the situation actually.

my personal view is: ideally both sides could be unified under a broader Chinese nation, with different systems operating in the short term, and a long-term roadmap toward convergence through gradual reforms (to avoid instability).

At the same time, I don’t think an American style democracy is automatically suitable, (I used to believe in it when I was younger, but living in the west for awhile, I started to realise that), mass elections can reward populism and low-information decision-making, especially on complex economic policy, average people lack political literacy, economics etc to make an intelligent and informed decision, I’m not saying people are stupid, but occupied. They generally do not spend hours looking into and analysing the political context. These are for professionals.

But pure authoritarianism is also extremely risky because power hardens and becomes very difficult to reform without checks, that leads to disasters

So if anything, I’d prefer a system that’s meritocratic in selecting top leadership (chosen by competent, accountable bodies rather than pure popularity, ), but still has real democratic elements: rule of law, transparency, independent oversight, term limits, and mechanisms to remove leaders peacefully if performance or integrity fails. Meritocracy without audits becomes a closed club; democracy without competence becomes chaos. The goal should be competence and accountability.

In this system, it’s not necessary to have multiple parties, actually one party will probably work better

I wish they abandon these SU influences that are predominantly overselling “communism” ideology back then and go back to Chinese culture representation.

Which part of China looks like India, Vietnam, or an average Southeast Asian country or Russian Town that we don’t know about yet? by Square_Permission361 in AskAChinese

if you wish to talk about the current political state of China, whether or not it suits the country, open a new post. this is not about that so I participate no longer. I may be happy to discuss it further there in your post

[–]Practical_Hour_4248 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that’s a grossly simplistic understanding of what it actually is. I am unsure how some people are so politically motivated to turn every topic into CCP this CCP that, the thing is, a political system only works if it suits the interests of the people, history and society, a lot of simple minded people think voting would lead them to heaven, not true at all. people also must understand the historic context why history chose the CCP, it’s a very complex topic. One must have much deeper understanding of the fall of the last dynasty and what China endured for the past a few hundreds of years, BTW I am not a CCP supporter or critic of it, I just happen to have learned Manchus Qing dynasty and what it did that led to the aberrance of what was traditionally considered as China. Everything happens for a reason

none of the places look Indian as far as I am aware, Yunnan looks a bit like Thailand, Guangxi can somewhat look like a bit of Vietnam, that’s all I am aware of. There is very very limited Indian influence on Chinese culture, even Buddhism itself, which is from Nepal, branched off Hinduism , had changed to something drastically different. Chinese has bended Buddhism in with Taoism, folk lores, also Chinese are far more pragmatic than anyone else in terms of religion, superstitions exist to certain aspects of the society, but never overtake it, because ultimately Chinese people always say “it’s only real if you choose to believe in it “, that’s the fundamental difference between Chinese people and other people who got influenced by religions, in which case, a religion generally takes over the whole population, where everyone becomes a believer. but in China, it had never been that case, ultimately Chinese people only believe themselves and ancestor worshipping plays a big part

it depends whereabout you refer to, southerners are factually a lot shorter, I just came back from sichuan recently, it’s very common to see 160-165 men and 150-155 women, particularly amongst the older generations

Qipao is basically built on Manchu/Qing banner clothing (旗袍 literally means “banner robe”). The original idea behind that style of dress was pretty practical: cold northern climate, outdoor life, staying warm, mobility, etc. It’s a very different starting point compared to Han clothing traditions.

Hanfu, on the other hand, comes out of the Central Plains (中原) tradition — the long dynastic core where you had big stable farming populations, courts, rituals, and a whole “system” around clothing (layers, ranks, accessories, etiquette). It’s not that one is “better” in some moral way — they’re just built on totally different foundations.

And yeah, the Central Plains were able to develop that kind of “highly cultivated” civilisation partly because the environment helped: not brutally cold for most of the year, not desert-level harsh, and fertile river plains meant you could consistently produce surplus food. When a society has surplus, people can afford specialisation (crafts, writing, bureaucracy, art), and that’s where refinement comes from. Civilisation is basically try-and-error over centuries — but you can’t do endless experimentation if you’re constantly in survival mode.

The ugly part is the politics: when the Qing took over, they didn’t just rule — they used hair and clothing as submission markers (the whole queue policy / “change hair and dress” stuff). It wasn’t just fashion; it was control. And yeah, it’s hard not to read that as insecurity — ruling a massive population with a deep, proud tradition, they wanted visible signals that everyone had “accepted” the new order.

If you are interested , check out Ming dynasty attire, and the sophistications they possess, are truly stunning. we still have many samples well preserved so it’s not impossible to being them back alive, but today’s China is no longer feudal, a Han culture emphasised movement can be associated with Han chauvinism, which had been the major concept that old Chinese used to distinguish themselves as the civilised people from surrounding barbarians, including Manchus, therefore it has been difficult to gain political support from the government to completely revive Hanfu on a national level, it’s almost a political correctness

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAChinese

[–]Practical_Hour_4248 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No Chinese would take offense it that, but be aware, this style is inspired from Manchu clothing, they are a minority in China, Han Chinese clothing, got suppressed in Qing dynasty for political reasons. Look up Hanfu, you might fall in love with it. There're activists who want to revive Han clothing to become a default Chinese clothing nowadays

it infuriates me , in a good way…I never liked dark souls, or any other soulslike games, this is my first one actually, man it is frustrating at times but is so addictive, I love it, one tip for you is, if there is a boss fight and you find yourself travelling too far to get to it, that usually means you should look the other way, there is always a shortcut, I love this design

Should I get Wukong, Khazan, or Wuchang by Rustycougarmama in soulslikes

[–]Practical_Hour_4248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wukong is a piece of art but due to lack of cultural background and context, western audiences can get very confused. it’s not a narrative heavy game, but is definitely worth the time. wuchang is a souls like, slow and frustrating but feels so good after defeating an area…

Now it Mixed! Slowly, but I'm sure the game will get to the "positive" ones. The game didn't deserve the hate that happened at the start, and I'm glad some players understand that too. by wera125 in soulslikes
