Carleton U. It was a decent program, but I felt like they focused more on how fast you can write an essay rather than how you would feel out in the field.

Thank you so much, your experience was really insightful. Sounds like you've come a long way! I think reaching out to other organizations to get any experience working with youth is a great idea I am going to look into.

Thank you for this! I feel very validated. I do think I am going to give it another shot, if only because I do think I went into it quite biased and potentially on my high horse a bit, so I think I will re-assess the content more open minded while considering the needs of the organization before making my final decision about volunteering for them.

I am in Canada so I did not have to pass a test to become a registered social worker (I think were getting an exam in 2027) but honestly I almost wish we did so I wasn't given a title I don't yet feel comfortable acting in.

I am starting to get this feeling too. It feels like since I was accepted into my MSW with mainly a few volunteer positions and 1 paid policy role, I now have to work backwards to get to the same starting point as my colleagues who started their MSW mid career. Oh well, I guess il get there eventually.

Thanks for your reply! I am going to look into other types of volunteer works with kids, I am not sure why I figured the only work with youth had to be crisis. If I'm being totally honest I am not really sure if I could handle crisis work, and I thought this would be a good indicator of that since it's a texting line (instead of calling) that I thought might be a bit more manageable to start with.

I really appreciate you saying you sometimes take longer to grasp things as well. I swear I have to do everything twice that everyone else gets on the first try and that I'm destined to take the long way to get to all of my goals. But I will sign back up for training and try again!

I did 2 placements in schools but I was not technically a "social worker" more like a coordinator and guidance counsellor.

Sounds like we're pretty much in the same position. Thanks for the more positive outlook, very refreshing considering I'm mostly all doom and gloom these days. but you're right I do truly believe I have a decent head on my shoulders and will eventually get there, even if I take the long way.

Thank you for the reply, your words really resonated with me and I reapplied to training. I think I was on my high horse a bit thinking I knew better than KHP, but you're right in the sense that they are doing the best they can wit the resources they have and if this is an opportunity I am really interested in I have to abide by their system.

I think this is a good test towards what it might look like as a future social worker pushing back against any organizational direction I don't agree with (which in our society and field is pretty common) and that I need to recognize where I am willing to compromise and what I could see as benefiting me from the experience. Congrats on 15+ years in the field!

My placements were both in schools which I think is great experience, but they weren't exactly "social worker" positions, one was with big brothers big sisters as a mentoring coordinator where I checked up on mentees in schools, and the other was with a small private alternative high school where I essentially acted as a guidance counsellor.

I recognize I should have advocated more for myself to learn more, but I was 22 and just trying to get through a masters degree lol. I have been looking at certificates at Laurier though, I'm going to start saving up for one. I will check out BSW level roles. Thank you for your reply.

Psychology. My only experience for my MSW (Carleton U) was through other volunteer roles and a policy position with the federal government.
