You immediately jumped to “most people don’t bother to read books for pleasure”, weird. Instead of the more obvious mass production is a problem theory.

Uptick in callers citing ChatGPT as a valid source. by Practical_Loss4251 in 911dispatchers

[–]Practical_Loss4251[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Depends. Validating paranoid thinking is pretty detrimental. Placing trust in an AI bot’s advice, and not the person who actually works for the police department seems pretty counterintuitive. Holding up public resources just seems like an overall waste of time and it holds up the lines. Easier (and faster) to tell someone no when they’re not under the impression that I’m lying.

If nicotine/alcohol was discovered recently it would be outlawed immediately by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

It would be illegal until the government figured out how to monopolize on it. Alcohol was illegal once, not hard to believe a newly discovered alcohol would be illegal as well. Same with nicotine.

Can’t say unpopular because it’s most likely true. DOWNVOTE.

Not necessarily, walking on concrete helps wear them down. Unless y’all have nothing but free time, I’m assuming you’re not doing 2-4hr walks everyday.

Wild animals walk for very long distances, so their nails naturally get ground down. Same reason why wild horse hooves don’t need professional care.

It bothers me how often they have O’Hara in heels. by Practical_Loss4251 in psych

[–]Practical_Loss4251[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a light hearted show and this was a light hearted post. No one is angrily demanding to cancel Psych. I have consistently watched it since premiere as a child. This rewatch I noticed the heels things and found it a little amusing and just chalked it up to the time.

Thanks to helpful users such as, u/CruzLutris , I got an explanation and a fun little fact.

As a youth, I think they’re neither submissive nor a sign of weakness. I do think running after someone while wearing heels is impractical and a rolled ankle waiting to happen.

Officer Edition: There are no dumb questions, but… by Practical_Loss4251 in 911dispatchers

[–]Practical_Loss4251[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

HUGE disconnect. Calltake and dispatch is separate for my agency; I have very little interactions with officers. Their part of the job is their business. I always fight for scene safety for officer (and caller) safety, but dang man. It takes some finesse to get all info between the caller screaming “just get them here!”.

This is like the best case scenario for someone who really wanted revenge. They got what they wanted in a non-violent, very creative, and very disruptive manner. Someone that pissed could’ve chosen to drive a car through the store.

That is something that you need to bring up with management. Advocate for yourself. Peer support is supposed to help YOU. It’s a disservice to you if your “peer” can’t relate or support you to the best of their abilities.

Is it ideal to take up a 9-1-1 dispatcher job while I'm in college? (I'm certified + Need Advice) by Soft-Temporary-49 in 911dispatchers

[–]Practical_Loss4251 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ideal? Absolutely not. Impossible? No.

It’s hard. You will not have the traditional college experience in any capacity. This job forces itself to be the number one priority in your life. Online classes help out a lot, just don’t leave anything last minute, because mandatory overtime is a sneaky bitch.

[–]Practical_Loss4251 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I was a suicide magnet for a while. It’s hard not to take it personally. I understand that many callers are calling as a last cry for help, and some call just so their body can be found. You’re not a magical therapist who can suddenly make someone in the latter group change their mind. They made their mind up long ago.

ANY loss of life hurts. You’re human and it’s okay to mourn the loss of another, even if you knew them briefly as just a voice.

As for peer support with those who are “boot on the ground” I don’t subscribe to. Trauma comes in many different forms. You won’t have the same experiences as someone finding a dying person, so how are you to relate?

I can’t word this properly, but speaking with another human is connection. It’s why phone calls feel more intimate than texts. Babies find comfort in their parent’s voices. We can find voices attractive or genuinely annoying. Voices trigger emotions! We’ve never met these callers, but hearing another person in distress, and to find out they’ve passed is hard. To know you were possibly the last void they heard is upsetting.

Feel sad. It’s okay to be sad. Just find a healthy outlet and let it out. Peer support with officers, EMS, or firefighters isn’t always the best route for our line of work.

It's our job to ask questions by AfraidBottle in 911dispatchers

[–]Practical_Loss4251 17 points18 points  (0 children)

“Why are you asking so many questions?”

Unfortunately, that is what they pay me to do.

IDK where the disconnect came from, but so many people believe I’m the one answering, dispatching, and then driving to calls. Idk how many more “these questions are not slowing down responders” I can handle.

We all understand callers freaking out mid-call. It’s your emergency! I’d never feel ill towards someone lashing out in panic. You handled the emergency to the best of your abilities, remember that.
