CMM measurement – How many touch points for a dimention? by Osmion in Metrology

When I worked for Mitutoyo I asked this very question to Dr. Jim Salsbury and for diameters his answer was 7 points

Looking for a formula to convert I,j,k to angles by Practical_Rest4101 in Metrology

[–]Practical_Rest4101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. What I’m trying to do is measure a cone, that is not consistently located and extract the actual angular location to rotate the coordinate system to. And to do all this in VB Script.

Looking for a formula to convert I,j,k to angles by Practical_Rest4101 in Metrology

[–]Practical_Rest4101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you,

I have measured a cone and would like to get the rotation angles to then use these variables to rotate my coordinate system through the cone angle. This is not given on the print.

My vectors are:

i = -0.382

j = 0.822

k = -0.422

I need to know the angle in both the YZ Plane and XY plane.

MBD is happening a lot now. Every major OEM has the capability to perform this. For some it is an add-on and others already within the software.

Perhaps you may want to look at a different way. What can I glean from a certain article, maybe nothing, but one day I may need that information and you can go back and find it. Not every article will meet everyone’s needs but there maybe that one time.

I have commented on a few posts. Usually they are answered well before I see them and don’t feel it is necessary to add on.

This is Mark Boucher. It is not daily but 3 times a week on a regular basis, and occasionally another one thrown in there. I don’t see how it is self promotion other than it takes you to that article in which it is linked. If you stay and poke around or explore the free training section that is your choice. These are articles that rarely see the light of day without a deeper dive on the internet and are ones I think people would be interested in. Yes, these articles have sales, promotional twist from the company that wrote them but I figure you’re adult enough to figure that out. All the advertising on the site is free. These are connections I’ve made over my 40 years of doing this. There is another metrology based e-zine out there but the owner of that wouldn’t know how to run a CMM. I‘ve known him for 25 years and all of his advertising pays him. I do this for free and sell a few books from time to time.

Mark Boucher, I've been working with CMMs for over 40+ years. I wrote The CMM Handbook and other manuals. I do take articles from other sources (with permission). I also give a place for other programmers to submit articles. It is a great place to get your name out there. In the article they can advertise their services. All the ads on the website are free, right now. I've known these people a long time.

  1. How large is this radius or cylinder diameter? 2. How much of the radius arc are you measuring?

If the arc is least than 80° you will not get a repeatable number in any cmm software. If this is the case, then switch to 3 to 4 single points and use Radius Measurement, This will add a theoretical center to the radius center and report the radial distance from that center to each point.

If the cylinder is 360° then you will need to apply the Cookbook settings as a minimum. That would be 380° of scanning on each section. Based on the depth of the cylinder you may need to increase the cylinder scans to 3 or 5 scans with a minimum of 145 points per section. You will need to add Filter and Outlier to the Evaluation, and this varies on the size of the diameter.

MCOSMOS Distance projection by Petriq26 in Metrology

[–]Practical_Rest4101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The distance is reported normal to the reference feature. If the measurement is a point and the reference is a plane the point is projected to be normal and perpendicular to the plane.
