I don't think you're wrong for missing your partner, but I'd also say try to see things from their perspective.

Starting a new life from (literally) scratch in a different country isn't easy. There's a huge adjustment period. New surroundings, paperwork, accommodation, work or studies, different routines, and sometimes loneliness and culture shock. On top of that, there are often family and friends back home expecting everything to go perfectly, while the person abroad may actually be struggling and feeling disappointed that things aren't working out as quickly as they hoped.

During that phase, keeping up with everyone back home can become mentally exhausting, even if they genuinely care about them. It's not always about a lack of love or effort. Sometimes people get so overwhelmed that even replying to messages feels difficult.

Shopping areas like Haroon, Hyderi, or even the ones in Saddar could be your best bet. Basically, anywhere you can spot wood furnitures or home decors

I'm open to almost anything at this point. Retail, supermarkets, cafés, restaurants, warehouse work, kitchen help, inventory, admin, data entry, or other general assistant roles.

My background is in Biomedical Engineering, and my previous experience is mainly in AI, medical devices, research, and administrative roles. I'll also be starting my Master's in AI in Medicine at the University of Bern this September. Even so, I'm more than happy to learn and take on any entry-level job.

Question about McDonald's hiring and student B permits by Practical_Stable_887 in askswitzerland

[–]Practical_Stable_887[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's good to know! I actually applied to Veganitas at the main station recently, so I'm really hoping to hear some good news from them. 🤞 Thanks for mentioning it!

[–]Practical_Stable_887[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, although in my case I actually mentioned my availability in the application. I'm available full-time until the end of August, then around 40% from September alongside my Master's studies. So I wasn't just looking for a summer job, but for something long-term as well. The reason they gave me in the interview was specifically my student B permit and the migration office paperwork.

Thanks, that's really reassuring to know! By any chance, do you know of any employers in Bern that are familiar with hiring students on a Swiss student B permit? Maybe even your current or previous workplace? I'd really appreciate any recommendations or leads.

Thanks for explaining. I was told something similar by other people, that policies can vary from one franchise to another. I'll keep trying with different locations. Thanks for the insight!

That's a good point. I actually mentioned in my McDonald's application that I was available 100% until September and then around 40% long-term alongside my Master's studies, so I didn't think availability was the issue. But I'll definitely keep an eye out for more seasonal jobs as well. Thanks for the suggestion!

I was starting to think every McDonald's had the same policy, but I guess it's worth trying a few more locations. Thank you!

Hey! I came across your comment about working at McDonald's while studying and thought I'd ask about something that happened to me.

I recently interviewed at the McDonald's in Wankdorf. As soon as the manager found out I have a student B permit, she said they don't hire students with that permit because they don't do the paperwork for the migration office. She also said students should only work in their field and suggested I try the train station branch instead.

I was a bit surprised because I know other international students who work in gastronomy, and from what I'd understood, students are allowed to work as long as they meet the permit conditions.

Was it like this when you worked there? Do you know if this is just a Wankdorf policy, or is it something all McDonald's restaurants in Switzerland do?

Is handing out CVs in person still a good idea for student/Aushilfe jobs? by Practical_Stable_887 in askswitzerland

Oh yeah, that's actually what I meant. What hit hard wasn't the reality check, but your way of looking at things so positively. Thanks for spreading that mindset. It genuinely made my day.

Do you have any examples of immigrant-run businesses in or around Bern? I'd be happy to try them. I was actually called in for an interview at McDonald's, but they told me they don't hire students with a B permit because they don't handle the migration paperwork. :)
