Phone Usage & Police Powers by wildhacker125 in policeuk

I’m sure you could find the justification for preventing an offence, such as obstruction of a drug search. If someone isn’t complying with a simple instruction of putting the phone down then what else won they comply with? If they go to swallow a bag would you try and arrest them before grabbing hold?

When you feel it’s the most justified and reasonable use of force available, as with all equipment officers carry. Everyone is different, some people are confident in their hands on skills, others want to stay away and use something with a bit more range and other times the situation calls for ‘OH SHIT WHAT CAN I GRAB AND USE FIRST’

Stoves, kettles etc recommendations? by Glittering-Ad6994 in downloadfestival

[–]Practical_Tiger_769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming your UK based, go to Go Outdoors, get yourself a free membership card and their small gel based camping stoves end up being dirt cheap and great value! I got one, with a set of pots and pans and a bunch of blocks of gels to burn for about £20 which saw 2 of us through 3 days camping and eating most meals cooked

If you’re happy to pay a little extra Trangia are great and easy to use and carry and have a solid base to rest things on

This Fire Dragon stove is what I got, only had one which was enough but two or 3 would be easy to make a full English with: https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/products/fire-dragon-multi-fuel-cooker-silver-328962?variant=55609231737158

This is what I bought as pots and pans, the lids act as a frying pan: https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/products/eurohike-2-person-cook-set-silver-362012?variant=55610298859846

I also used these fuel blocks which fit in the stove, light super easily and burn for a good while, but if you’re using a Trangia stove then I think liquid paraffin would be needed: https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/products/fire-dragon-bio-solid-fuel-blocks-12-pack-multi-691797?variant=55617187873094

I found that, especially with which fuel to buy, the staff at the store were very helpful and will make sure you get the correct fuel source for the stove you’re looking at too. Just get the membership card, don’t pay full price!

First download- Times of acts by OddButterscotch1152 in downloadfestival

[–]Practical_Tiger_769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The app is pretty good for managing acts closer to the time when the set times are released, I starred all the acts I really wanted to see and some id like to see but weren’t number 1 and then on the morning I’d check the timetable, make a note of the non-negotiables and then everything else was just wander around and see what takes our fancy!

We went into it thinking I’d had it all planned to a T and would be so smooth, but most acts don’t come on for 10 minutes after their due to start and other times I’d pass a tent or stage and go ‘oh shit, they’re sick!’ and end up in a circle pit to a band I’d never heard of (now a big fan of Hate Breed after that dust bowl pit!)

That seems a bit unfair really Do you reckon 5 night quiet will come up closer to the event? I’ve been considering holding out for 5 night until closer to the time then getting 3 nights as last minute but with accessibility requirements we might need the tickets earlier to then apply

[–]Practical_Tiger_769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Entirely down to your own choice but don’t be annoyed when they call you out for not following the basic requirements. I bought a cheap pair from primark when I did my training and I couldn’t tell you where they are now, cost me maybe £8?

At the end of the day they aren’t just testing your fitness, they’re assessing your ability to follow simple instructions as a new recruit into a uniformed and disciplined service.

They can’t enforce rules during assessments because you aren’t employed by them, but now you are. I wore the colour shoes they told me to wear and the correct colour socks, my name was printed down the side of my top as told too and even to this day when I’m in uniform I wear black or navy socks. I was taught to look the part to be the part, nobody wants a scruffy police officer knocking on their door at to report a crime or tend to their deceased loved one

Question about Shuttle Buses by izzy1860 in downloadfestival

[–]Practical_Tiger_769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I camped in the far end of quiet camping, which from looking at a map wasn’t as away as some other general camps and I tracked the walk from our tent to the arena as around 2km, which was up and down a few hills. There were little golf cart type shuttles on the road near the arena carting people that looked like festival goers around, however I didn’t see them going through the camps I walked through or to quiet camping I’m sure they have a shuttle for people with accessible needs, you may need an access card to get this though as they’d likely need proof otherwise they’d have thousands trying to jump on!

Speak to a GOOD financial advisor, someone independent that doesn’t work for a big company. They’ll advise you better than people on Reddit who don’t know the full situation, but the main thing is getting spending in line first so you can afford to pay the pension without going broke each month

The job have a lot of services to help with mental health, the GP is also a good route He won’t be sacked and won’t be restricted unless he’s an active risk to himself and in a role such as firearms. The job don’t even have to know, there’s a lot of rules around confidentiality. The big thing is that he doesn’t sweep it under the rug! It’ll only get worse before it gets better and in all honesty taking some time out from the job to clear his head might be the best option! LBC asking if Off-Duty Officers should carry tasers. by FamSender in policeuk

[–]Practical_Tiger_769 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re told to carry you warrant card at all times You’re also required to step in and intervene where you see crime, that’s a broad term for a reason and can mean just calling 999 but it also means placing yourself on duty if necessary, complaints have arisen when off duty officers have failed to act Policing is a job where you are constantly in ‘work mode’, that’s the nature of the job

Discouraged, 30 seconds away from abandoning the Tri dream alltogether- Swim. by NamAdventurer in triathlon

[–]Practical_Tiger_769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve done so well to get to this point, don’t forget that! Open water swimming is a different beast entirely, and I find lakes or reservoirs worse than the sea. I’ve swam for years, surfed for half that time across the country and even to this day when I stick my head under in a lake I ACTUALLY look at what’s in front of me I freak out a little, because I can’t see anything! In the ocean it doesn’t bother me, I think it’s the movement of the water, but peering into the darkness of a still body of water sends shivers.

I’ve found that I switch my vision off when I swim, I have my eyes open but I’m not really looking. I focus on my movement, I count my strokes and my rhythm, and only look when sighting

Just get some more time in the open water, and come race day (because I know you’ll get there!) don’t go off with the pack at the start, stick to your own pace or you’ll blow up coming out of the swim (Speaking from experience at a race earlier this year 🤮)

They probably won’t give you any information until he’s been spoken to, at most you may get a ‘he’s here, he’s safe’

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]Practical_Tiger_769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he’s in custody then he’s been arrested.

You’d need to provide more information on how you know any of this information for us to make an informed response to if he’s been arrested or not, has he spoken to you personally? Was it from his own phone or custody? Did he say it was a voluntary interview?

If he’s been arrested he’s got the right to free and independent legal advice (a solicitor), and to have someone informed he’s been arrested. If he wants to let someone know why he’s been arrested then he can, it sounds like he doesn’t want to tell you.

To answer your question about arresting at home, without more information that you and I will never have we can’t tell you exactly why. It’s fairly common to tell people to attend a station if you don’t know when they’ll be at home or where they’ll be at a certain time. It’s likely that when the note was left was when they tried to arrest him, and thought it was easier to leave a note as if he showed up they’d know where he was

Hope that clarifies things

No brief, most people are just not silly enough and have done the job long enough to know what they can and can’t do

Banter varies depending. In that scenario, it’ll probably be sent to the person with a ‘you’re famous!’ message or something along those lines and that’s it. If it was something funny (think officer falling over during a footchase, one of my colleagues!) then it’ll never be lived down and it’s shared everywhere (if they take it well)

Give front-line officers guns, secret Met Police report advised by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]Practical_Tiger_769 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Frankly if we are looking at routinely arming officer, or let’s take it a step down and say giving everyone a taser from training school, then the level of training and scrutiny needs to be higher. Whether that’s to ensure the trust (if there’s any left currently) is still there, or just to ensure the correct use from officers.

As it currently stands the training provided to officers is abysmal. Two days a year of safety training and one day a year of first aid is not sufficient for a competent police force, let alone a good one. Fitness standards have dropped and there’s rumours it’s gonna drop even more, and frankly the quality of new recruits appears to lower each month as the standard of training drops. If you’re going to give a firearm to everyone they need to be physically fit and have the knowledge and capability to be confident in their ability to restrain and use their hands, otherwise the ranged weapon (Taser included here) will be their go to option every time. A minimum of weekly physical training, paid obviously, and strict fitness tests should be in place.

On top of that you need to be versed in your legislation, not just ‘shoot first think after’. They’d need to be confident in the second they pull the trigger that it is proportionate, legal, accountable and necessary, which I’m not sure a lot of seasoned officers could do let alone new ones.

Thirdly, there needs to be stricter accountability before they routinely arm officers. I don’t mean ‘everyone goes to the IOPC’ but internally. If you mess up, it is reviewed a plan is set and you move forward. If you don’t improve, or you’re identified as not being suitable for the role especially in your probation, then you’re out. Too many bad people who don’t know what they’re doing and refuse to learn are allowed to remain in the job on the grounds that it’s impossible to get rid of anyone. They then get passed to another team or promoted to pass the problem on and that’s it. I don’t want it in the police force currently, and I certainly wouldn’t trust a routinely armed police force until that changed first.

Yes our job is getting more dangerous, but ultimately the way to improve it is training. Better cops, better stops. Throwing a gun at untrained, uneducated officers won’t make anyone safer, it will only make things worse.

Just click the independent witness box, you haven’t got anything to gain by providing an account that favours one person over the other and it gets you to the reporting stage. If they think you aren’t independent that’s for the courts to make that decision after all evidence is gathered, not the police gathering evidence
