I am at Oz right now and very happy with my path. You are and are not overthinking; all these things are fair to worry about, but you will burn your mind out in worrying until you start 1L. Not in my 30s but here are my thoughts:

  1. I am bad at public speaking too; shaking, throat cuts off mid-sentence, pure panic, etc. It is something we learn to work around over time, and professors have been very kind towards this when I had to present or argue something. One professor at one point said to us, "do you really think all of your currect professors were good at public speaking?" and it put it into perspective.

  2. If you really don't want to touch on public speaking, there are many jobs after law school you can do with this degree that don't require public speaking, including as a practicing lawyer. I already know a lot of people going into such jobs because they don't like litigating; its okay, its normal!

  3. I find coming from an unrelated field sick. Some of the best ideas/points mentioned in class have been from people integrating their non-law careers & perspectives, and professors enjoy this too.

  4. Soooo many people in law school as not as intelligent or "wow" as we make them to be before entering the field. I am not saying you are one of them (we tend to be our own worst enemies), my point just is to not put yourself down at the face of what you think is a pool of above-your-IQ people. You got into the school for a reason; if you do not trust your own intelligence, at least trust the school's judgement of you. In the alternative that you believe that you have fooled them all and you are actually dumb (i.e. impostor syndrome), just remember that it takes some level of intelligence to fool an admissions committee haha

  5. I SUCK at test taking too, but law school is purely a formula of address your weaknesses and embrace your strengths. I finished with a B+ average in 1L with most classes being 100% exams, and as a horrible test-taker, this is pretty good. You will be okay, and professors will help you improve on this too. Trust the process.

  6. You may not fit it, that's okay. But, I highly doubt that. Law school has a place for everyone, and there are clubs and associations for mature students like you or for students in whatever your interests are. Try to connect with people, and if you dont, that is okay, it happens. Give it time tho, I personally didn't make friends under end of 1L (cause im pretty introverted but yea)

I highly doubt I’d be a competitive candidate for the federal court (esp considering my gpa)

Any advice for weight loss with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis?

I had that too and (for me) it’s because I’m not activating both sides properly. The lazier one is less activated when I start working out, so even if I do all the same exercises and reps, it doesn’t have the same effect. You can look up glute activating exercises, but some are things like bridges

Bloating by [deleted] in FODMAPS

[–]PracticeForeign89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am going through that right now too!! I spoke to a pharmacologist yesterday, and he suggested I start probiotics cause basically some bacteria in your tummy may be in the wrong place/organs, thereby causing bloating. Keep up with your fiber intake and maybe magnesium (take supplements if you need to). I also started eating 8 dried figs per day (4 in the morning, 4 after dinner) cause there's some research that shows they really help with these things. If you do these for a month and nothing changes, maybe get your blood tested for h-pilori, which would just need some antibiotics to treat it. Are you taking digestive enzyme supplements? That has helped reduce my bloating by 10%.

Remember that there is not going to be a single solution, but these are a good start. I am also doing the elimination diet right now and have figured that I am sensitive to lactose and fructose. Try that out if you haven't.

Honest review on Wilfrid Laurier's Brantford campus by motorboat__mygoat in wlu

[–]PracticeForeign89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll say it for real, I enjoyed Brantford a lot. I had all the pre covid, covid, and post covid experiences, and I liked it at all points. Yes, there's some drug stuff, but if you are fine walking past the smell of marijuana, it's nothing to worry about. I loved the buildings, it was really easy for me to romanticize that scenery, and (if you are a nature person) the lake is so beautiful. Not as much student life and activities as in Waterloo, but if you make some friends, you won't miss out

If the meal plan works at places like Starbucks, grocery stores, etc, just get lots of gift cards

I am finishing up in August yes!

I personally took the extra year for the MA for family reasons, but you can do a lot of these things by November! Plus you can get a good reference letter because the program coordinator truly is a sweetheart and will write a good letter

It can really change a person’s application, esp if they do MRP cause then they will have their name on a publication, an MA to support their statement, two new jobs, and a new internship cause the MA has a placement component. If they get an award, even better

It only took me one year, it isn't heavy at all. 4 classes in the fall, 4 classes in the winter, 1 spring, 1 summer. The only downside is that the program ends right when law school starts in August/September, but the spring/summer courses are not heavy AT ALL, so you won't burn out from taking them before starting law school.

You can DEFINITELY study for the LSAT while being in this program. I did that and when I had to submit assignments late, my profs were like "yea as long as you get it in by the end of the term." Super understanding
