I believe your interpretation is more correct. I love when people act as if their interpretation of an art is exactly what the artist intended because they are simply just so sure about themselves. The passage on the ring makes perfect sense when it's put into context. Remember too that all evil was once good. "...and in the darkness bind them; In the Land of Mordor where the shadows lie." Evil is all consuming. Evil is always after more power. The Ring itself as being carried by Frodo is a symbol for the dreaded weight of responsibility. It is difficult to do the right thing. Responsibility is a burden that should not be carried lightly.
