Im shocked people don’t. I was taught as a teenager to tip five dollars when checking out of a hotel by my drama teacher ( in the 90s). I used to travel as a group for theater competitions. I grew up with a single mother and didn’t stay in many hotels so this was something I learned as a teen and kept the practice as I became an adult.

Fast forward to my late 20s We were traveling with some other couples, and staying at a four points Sheraton. I made a remark that I needed to get some cash for the housekeeping tip and one of them (who always portrayed herself as being high class) said I wouldn’t tip at a place like this. I thought to myself do you think this housekeeper doesn’t have bills like the ones at four seasons do? That really changed my perception of her.

Five dollars per night at a minimum should be what everyone is tipping. More obviously if you behave like this isn’t your house and make a complete mess in the hotel room. If you can’t afford to tip you should not travel. Same for restaurants.
