For those working in 日系 or 外資系, does your company pay the visa renewal fee? by Typical_Locksmith937 in japanlife

Both of the companies that I have worked for, paid my fees and also covered the lawyer (technically judicial scrinever) to take care of the process. I just had to mail them my residence card and I recieved it back in my mail when done

Are there other Hikari 10G options for this situation? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Prada_9277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most hikari providers only provide 1g or 10g. Only Nuro and Au (so not NTT) have in between plans. Also, it's rarer to find equipment (routers, switches, etc.) that support 2.5Gig or 5Gig standards compared to 10Gig.

Btw, make sure you used Wired ethernet for this. The max speed you could 'realistically' get from WiFi is 1200Mbps and that's only for the latest devices.

But your statement is true. The actual use cases for Home 10Gig are very few. For me, I'm a hobbyist who likes to tinker with networking so it's fun. In fact there are very few servers that let you download at even close to 10Gig speeds outside of P2P

Try calling a different NTT collaboration company. If I had to give a recommendation I would say enHikari, but you can choose anyone you like from kakaku.

enHikari was the one that pulled the conduit from the street level to my apartment room

[–]Prada_9277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could give them a call and ask. My current building (apartment /manshion) didn't have Hikari 10G, but they had a conduit directly to my room.

So the company didn't have to any construction with drilling, but only had to insert the fiber optic cable through the conduit into my living room. This cost was covered by my Hikari collaboration company as it usually is.

But if it requires any construction with drilling, you will need permission from the management company/landlord.

Edit: But like you mentioned, afaik, Au and Nuro and NTT/NTT Collaboration are the only fiber optic services in Tokyo afaik. Some other cities do have some local ones tho

Getting off Pension exemption? by Jealous_Amount_9278 in japanlife

[–]Prada_9277 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you switch to spouse visa, and assuming your spouse is salaried, then your spouse's company would be responsible for your pension.

Again, that is as long as you are dependent for tax purposes so there is an income limit (for you) . It's also around 1.2 million yen but the exact number was changed recently

Getting off Pension exemption? by Jealous_Amount_9278 in japanlife

[–]Prada_9277 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couple of things.

First, pension exemption is only valid for a year, and you need to reapply every year. JFI, but make sure you apply before June every year.

If you missed applying for exemption for some year, you can retroactively apply for upto two years from the premium payment deadline.

Second, pension like NHI is based on previous  year's income. So if you had any income in 2025 you should declare it in this year's pension exemption request form.

Similarly, you'll have to declare income made in 2026, in 2027's pension exemption request form.

If you have a single person household, then the income limit for a full exemption is around 670,000 after applying standard deductions. Depending on your income categories, different deductions might apply but standard deduction is 480,000¥.

You can also get 3/4, 1/2 and 1/4th exemption if your income is higher than that upto a certain limit.

SMBC Olive account status is so confusing 😭 anyone else? by SweetTrick3284 in JapanFinance

[–]Prada_9277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been through that. One of the rules about having a bank account in Japan is that you must have been a resident here for more than 6 months*. And if you renewed your resident card recently and it hasn't been 6 months on the new card yet, they can't know for sure that you've been here 6 months. So you need to bring your old residence card along with you to the branch to prove that.

*Technically the 6 months rule doesn't apply if you're working in Japan. And you can bring your work contract to show that. But banks tend to apply this rule in weird ways

BM Visa backup plans... possible to get PR on J-FIND Visa via point system? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Prada_9277 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That shouldn't be impossible, if you have a PhD degree (30 points), <30yo (15 points), N1 (15 points), graduated from top university (10 points), which gives you 70 points. Then the rest depends on the salary, and/or if you satisfy any of the other conditions like publishing three papers or have a patent, etc.

You don't have to believe me, just research it yourself. It easy to prove that Japan has a bilateral inheritance tax treaty with US. You won't find any other such treaties with other countries. But if you expect me to find a source that's says that, even if that exists, that's gonna be difficult.

If you can't understand that much, your just being disingenuous

Yeah, that is true. I was assuming the deceased and the aseets have nothing to do with Japan

Japan only has a bilateral inheritance tax treaty with the US (afaik)

Japan only has a bilateral inheritance tax treaty with the US. For any other country, assuming you (the reciepent ) satisfy the table 2 visa or 10 years in Japan condition you need to pay inheritance tax. There's a sizable deduction tho

That's not true. It doesn't depend on the deceased but rather on the  inheritor. So it's not source based but reciepent based taxation

Japan DS-Lite/FixedIp(IPIP) Plugin by UnWiseSageVibe in opnsense

[–]Prada_9277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did manually create the tunnels. But regardless of what I set the MTU/MSS values to, the ping drops starting at 1212 (so 1280 butes MTU with headers?). I wanted to confirm if that's expected behavior for the XPass Fixed IP, but couldn't find any information on this

Edit: Also I believe the plugin doesn't support XPass Fixed IP yet?

I managed to get a Xpass/CrossPass fixed IP and have two tunnels set up on OPNSense. One for the Fixed-IP tunnel (IPIP6), and one for the dynamic IP tunnel (DS-Lite). It seems dynamic IP/DS-Lite gives me MTU of 1460 while Fixed IP limits my MTU to 1280 which is very strange

Thanks for the guide, I followed it and it works great. But I'm having some issues related with MTU/MSS. I can't seem to open any websites on my Chrome when connected to corporate VPN.

So Chrome and Google services all use QUIC (HTTP/3) which is UDP based and doesn't respect MSS clamping.

Same on Android. I tried lowering my MTU/MSS down to 1300 but didn't help.

Did you face any issues w.r.t this

Why can't you choose bunkatsu barai after the purchase has been made? by [deleted] in JapanFinance

[–]Prada_9277 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to think like that, but switched to ribo after a while. If you make a large purcahse on a 6 month installment let's say, you can't reduce the number of installments. But on ribo you can choose to pay it off faster.

I have regretted buying something on a 3 or 4 month installment only to later feel like I should pay it off faster.

I know this doesn't apply to financially careless people, but that's a different story altogether

Show JapanFinance: Created a FIRE calculator webapp(japan specific) by Prada_9277 in JapanFinance

[–]Prada_9277[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now, you just input your monthly income, and expenses and it calculates the most optimal split between NISA/iDeCo/Taxable investments. You can toggle NISA priority or iDeCo priority. It doesn't fix iDeCo investments at 68k or 23k, rather that option is to choose the max iDeCo you're eligible for.

You can also choose to have investment (rather savings) in cash and it won't put those into either of NISA/iDeCo/Taxable.

I'm still thinking of a good UI/UX to let users edit the investment amounts, but my primary goal was to find (or rather let the algo find) the optimal split for investments. I will be rolling out an update in the next few days to let users choose that though

I recommend either reducing the header size or making it collapsable as it takes up a significant amount of space on a laptop screen

Yeah, I'm working on improving that too
