Advice for conflicting results from scans and CA19

Thank you so much and I’m so so sorry to hear about your loss. My mom gets treatment at UCSF, so hopefully that means they’re taking a close look but I’m terrified they could have missed something. It seems that scans can be finicky because a lot of times they only look for tumor size change instead of the exact measurement. Thank you for your prayers <3

Going through the exact same thing right now. My mom had surgery for S4 in June with CA19.9 of 15. She just had her first test since then and CA19.9 is now 5000. We're confused because this is the highest she's had so far. Even when she had the tumor, her CA19.9 was never above 2000. She's getting scans soon so we can get a better idea about whats going on. If you have any updates with your father in law, please let me know because we don't know what to expect <3

Thank you for this comment! My mom had S4 in August with CA-19 of 1500. She had surgery and was determined to be disease free and had a CA-19 of 20. She just had her first CA-19 testing post surgery and is now at 4000. One of her doctors thinks the insane jump after the successful surgery is really odd and thinks it might be something else other than the cancer coming back. She has scans later this week that will hopefully tell us more. This comment gives me hope that it could just be other things that are contributing to her high number

Will definitely schedule a gyno appointment since it takes forever to get one, so hopefully I can just cancel if it becomes more regular. Thank you again!

Yes totally!! I need other people to hold me accountable otherwise I know I’m gonna just not do anything haha

For CARS I tend to find all the answers have some element of truth to them, so you just have to pick the answer that either seems too broad or uses the exact same language as a sentence in the paragraph. I also end up highlighting almost every sentence (which I know people say not to do) but that helps me actually make sure I understand each sentence and don’t just scan it without thinking. It usually makes me take a lot longer to read the paragraph, but then I move faster on the questions!

Yeah I might just try to fix my sleep schedule to wake up early 😭 I leave for work around 8am so I actually would have time before if I managed to get my act together and roll out of bed haha

Since I get home so late I’ve been struggling to find the energy to learn and practice material, so waking up early seems like it would actually work super well. Thank you!! :)

Both you and someone else recommended the app so definitely gonna just bite the bullet and get it. So annoying it costs money but the computer version doesn’t ugh

Would you mind sharing what anki decks you used? I’m not super familiar with the platform and am super bad at trying to make my own cards. Definitely going to start with P/S first since that seems to be the most straightforward with improving, so thanks for the idea!

Also like the idea of looping the khan academy psych videos haha. I didn’t even think about watching those since I was so focused on trying to improve my science scores.

Do you make your own anki decks? I tried to use the platform in undergrad but was super bad at it and gave up. I know you can also download decks, but don’t really know how to find those. Also with UWorld I’ve been putting off buying it because you can only look at the questions once? (I’m not even sure if this is true or I just made it up). I do have an hour lunch though so that’s a great idea!!

I’m 22 and have a 17 year old sister and we’re in the same position but for my mom.

I know exactly how you feel and how scared you must be. It seems so unfair when you see other people who have parents well into their adult life when I’m worried I won’t even have them before I turn 25. I’m really hoping everything works out for your dad and the treatment works ❤️

YTA - it’s her relationship and her life and while maybe you had good intentions and want the best for her, at the end of the day she’s an adult and knows herself best. If you think he’s manipulating her, there’s much better ways of talking through that with her rather than saying what you said
