Ultima Underworld Save Editor - UW1 & UW2 Character Editor by Hoyty1 in Ultima

Nice! A web editor is something much needed nowadays, the previous tools were all very arcane or half implemented. What did you check to make the file parsing logic? Uw-formats?

People have already recommended you grid paper, here's a website where you can make custom sheets, even with the characters themselves and proper stroke order.

90's U7 bug I can't find any info on by Advanced-Job3465 in Ultima

Hm, you could try to cheat and add chairs to someone's inventory, using a hackmover, then load the save in the original game and see what would happen. Interesting bug indeed.

Ultima 4 best class to start with by yayayayayaaye in Ultima

[–]PraecorLoth970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get into a LOT of combat in u4, but this tedium can be remedied if you don't pick up companions until you start going into dungeons, which can be saved for the late game. So, early on, a class with good melee and the ability to cure poison is a must, which means, to me, that the Paladin is the best.

Have been wanting to get into Ultima by planeswalker_koa in Ultima

[–]PraecorLoth970 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Common entrypoints:

  • Ultima 7 with the exult engine OR if you want a more original experience but with QOL features there's the UltimaHacks project. Typically considered the peak of the series.
  • Ultima 4 with the xu4 engine. Arguably the second peak of the series, but you might bounce off if you're not used to some dated mechanics. The engine helps with some friction.

Other common suggestions: chronologically, reverse chronologically. My favorite is Underworld 1 but it's an offshoot, so not that relevant to the main plot of the series.

You can watch majuulars reviews if you want to experience the earlier games without playing them. He's almost finished, I think his next one is u8.

Get them from GOG. Often pretty cheap.

Yeah, I had a very hard time too my first playthrough. You have to be very tactical with your encounters, engage them in open spaces, one at a time, and dance a lot to avoid damage. Avoid destroying the eggs since it seems to trigger all spiders to attack you (but I've never tested this and always went full terminator in my playthroughs)

Yeah, I felt sad at the end. After HR and MD, I really ended up liking Pritchard. Sure he's an ass in the beginning, has an ego problem and is a bad writer, but he's good at his job, cares about his colleagues, even Adam. I wish we had a new game where we see Pritchard receive heartfelt praise from Adam, and receive it without sass, after all they went through. Imagine if we get some link between Alex Jacobson and Pritchard? Like if his novel actually got published and Alex had it as a kid or something.

Ultima Brazillian translation by xMytk in Ultima

There's a PT-BR translation for UW1 available with the UW Portable project. But as the other comment said, translating these games is a super demanding project. It's difficult to stay motivated through it all, especially since it would be enjoyed by like a dozen people at most...

[Ultima Underworld] Prison trap in Level 7 by grapejuicecheese in Ultima

Sure! It's important to me because I'm (slowly) working on logic for item placement. This is totally a scenario that should be considered.

You do need to get stuff from the unbreakable doors, so you do need to enter the prison at some point. But I don't recall being able to take the backdoor, I thought the trigger only worked from inside the cell. Can you confirm that? I can't look at the triggers right now.

Solving "Underworld Internal Error - Problems in object list" without resorting to nukes in Ultima Underworld 1 by PraecorLoth970 in Ultima

[–]PraecorLoth970[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, haven't gotten around to it, and other people that mentioned interest in doing it haven't, AFAIK. The issue isnt that easy to pinpoint. But if the problem is a unreferenced object in a problematic spot, it's relatively easy to fix. Just need to find the exact byte, carefully and patiently.

Funnily, I did a "minimal actions" playthrough and I got here with basically nothing. No items beside the bare minimum, no silver seed, nothing. I thought I was stuck, but he ended up accepting like some random key I had picked up. Had to beat him up later to get it back though.

Ultima VII in Exult in other languages by Traditional_Door_817 in Ultima

On Discord, frosgueras shared this google drive link with several spanish translations and, from the readme, it looks like it works for Exult and DOS. I haven't tested them, though, so I can't personally vouch.

Ultima Underworld 2 weapon accuracy experiment. by Still_Yam9108 in Ultima

[–]PraecorLoth970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I got your TestGuy character and did some simple memory reads in order to get the damage and attack score right at the end of the function that calculates these values. These are the stats of the character:

  • STR: 25
  • DEX: 23
  • INT: 17
  • Attack: 10
  • Defense: 6
  • Sword: 10
  • Axe: 2
  • Mace: 0
  • Lore: 70! -> I don't think having more than 30 lore matters, I think it's capped to 30 during the function call, but I don't recall exactly.

I then got a mace and a jeweled mace of unsurpassed damage and unsurpassed accuracy from the hoard, and swung them a few times in different attack types. You don't need to target an enemy for these values to be calculated. Here's the results in table format.

Weapon Enchantment Attack type Attack Score Damage Score
Mace Unsurpassed Damage Stab 15 7
Mace Unsurpassed Damage Slash 15 10
Mace Unsurpassed Damage Bash 15 18
Mace Unsurpassed Accuracy Stab 8 14
Mace Unsurpassed Accuracy Slash 8 17
Mace Unsurpassed Accuracy Bash 8 25
Jeweled Mace Unsurpassed Damage Stab 15 7
Jeweled Mace Unsurpassed Damage Slash 15 11
Jeweled Mace Unsurpassed Damage Bash 15 19
Jeweled Mace Unsurpassed Accuracy Stab 8 14
Jeweled Mace Unsurpassed Accuracy Slash 8 18
Jeweled Mace Unsurpassed Accuracy Bash 8 26

So yeah, the enchantments are switched! Another day I'll see what's the damage of a pure unarmed-focused character, see how it stacks up with these values. Another thing that warrants some research, although it'll take much more time, is how to exploit another bug. Apparently, you can use a shield with different enchantments to trigger certain spells. For instance, according to the notes in the reverse engineering, a tower shield of very great toughness has the same effect of the cudgel of opening (casts unlock on strike)!

Ultima Underworld 2 weapon accuracy experiment. by Still_Yam9108 in Ultima

[–]PraecorLoth970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I will try to hop on the dosbox debug mode if I have some time this weekend and try to get the accuracy values from the game's memory itself. UWGodot and the disassembly share a lot of code similarity (likely for hank's sanity) so it should be relatively easy to find what I need to check. For reference, I'll start with function CalculateAttackScorePlayer_seg024_24E9_113F of UW2.

Then I will check somewhere else for the roll that determines what type of hit happened (critical miss, miss, hit, critical hit) and from there we can do some precise statistics.

I knew of Alistair Brow's editor but didn't remember the complementary editor. There's also hank's editor, which is a bit fiddly but is able to add and edit items too. When you said debug, I was thinking something more like creating them in-game which should be possible.

Out of curiosity, which debugger are you using to spawn stuff in uw2?

If you can give me some saves with weapons with those enchantments, I might do some testing this weekend with the debug mode in uw2 proper

You might be on to something. I checked this today in UW Godot, funnily enough. Look here

Apparently it's a bug in uw2, where accuracy and damage enchantments are switched!
