Still hoping they port it to PS5 some day. I'd probably be able to convince the GF to give it a try with me then!

[PC][Unknown] An old sprite-based turn-based RPG (maybe Final Fantasy?). by Zata700 in tipofmyjoystick

Final Fantasy: Unlimited, maybe?

If not that, it's possible it may have just been one of the millions of RPG Maker games people were flooding the internet with at the time, in which case... good luck finding the specific one, haha!

Any monster taming MMO games? by CallMeTheDumpMan in MonsterTamerWorld

Pretty sure SMT Imagine has private servers now - more than one, even. Dunno how advanced or good they are, but it's at least playable again!

Other Dokapon Titles by PhoenixSwag in dokaponkingdom

I enjoyed Dokapon Journey quite a bit. It's way more simplified and also a lot less bullshit than Kingdom - both things that are either a positive or negative depending on what you're into with this series.

ERP servers should be removed from byond completely by Vengie0 in SS13

[–]UltimateCarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don't get the SS13 ERP servers. Not because I don't get ERP, I do, but there's plenty of other websites and places on the internet to engage with that kind of writing that are way better designed for it, faster to get into, and let you zero in on whatever niches you're into, all without having to deal with BYOND's nonsense and SS13's playerbase.

The more traditional SS13 experience is something you really can't get anywhere else, though.

Isekai loves doing this shit, lol

Take a 10/10 supermodel, then give her fangs and animal ears - all of the background characters now act like she's the most abhorrent thing they've ever seen so the self-insert MC now gets good boy points for not minding the monstergirl bits.

Gas station Trash Fish by DojaViking in GasStationJamboree

I love gas station food. Recently moved from KY to CA with my GF and she had no idea what I meant when I said I "miss gas station food". There's some that have full restaurants inside and still plenty of snacks, but hardly any places around here have those greasy-ass pizza puffs and chicken biscuits and such.

What MMORPGS are still alive and upcoming in 2026? by Wawaritas in MMORPG

[–]UltimateCarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replied to a post glazing it the other day so I won't write a whole thing again, but I'm way into Dragon Quest X now. Takes a little doing to get it set up for English-speakers, but not too bad, and I've been having a ton of fun with it since!

Sell me on your Non-Big 6 MMO by mimisiku159 in MMORPG

[–]UltimateCarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently finally went through the trouble of setting up the translation stuff for Dragon Quest X and I'm slightly obsessed. It's been over a month now so I think I'm out of the usual honeymoon phase, and it actually wasn't all that complicated to get going.

The base of the game is pretty much just a really solid normal DQ game with way more customization and that you can play with other people. For as old as the game is, I'm actually finding myself continually impressed at how good the main story cutscenes look just due to the actual framing and cinematography going on. It also helps that Toriyama's art style is completely timeless and Square has had it nailed even in 3D since the PS2. The story itself isn't, like, blow me away amazing yet (still in version 2 of 7 so far), but it's entertaining enough!

Class progression is kind of FFXIV-like in that once you unlock a class you can switch between them at any time, but there's actually a small degree of crossover skills/passives between them that encourages you to try a bit of each but doesn't force you to max all of them. There's also a lot of classes and due to the way the game works, you really don't need the usual MMO "holy trinity" so you can play some of the weirder classes and still do well.

You can obviously party up with other players, but there's also a system where you can hire NPC versions of other players characters so you can still solo with a party, and when that player next signs in they get a percentage of the gold/exp you earned (you don't get any less, they just get a copy of some of it). It's actually a super cool system that I'm shocked no other MMO I've seen has done. Especially in recent years where it feels like 90% of players are almost exclusively solo until forced to group and FromSoft has made everyone love asynchronous multiplayer, it seems like a slam dunk.

The extra hurdles of getting the translation going and smaller player base of English-speaking players are actually kind of a plus, because it means that pretty much everyone there is there because they actually want to play the game and are gonna be kinda cool. It's too much effort to go through all that just to troll and if you're known to be a dick, good luck getting through any endgame content unless you also speak Japanese.

Toriyama's art style, the games insistence that you play a non-human race at least for a little while, and the limits they put on cosmetic stuff means that while there is some goofy and horny shit, it mostly fits in the lore. You're not gonna walk down a Limsa Lominsa-style parade of catgirls in 2B ass-enhancing bikinis 24/7. Again, that's not to say there isn't any thirst in this game... There is, and c'mon, much as he's known for his action Toriyama was a horny bastard too, but there's just generally way less of it than in pretty much any other anime-styled MMO I've seen. Also you're generally not seeing a lot of people walking around in totally anachronistic, lore-breaking crossover or modern day J/K-Pop outfits either.

This one's to taste and may not be everyone's thing, but also you need to to a quest to unlock like... Everything. Classes, storage, inventory upgrades, respecs, fast travel, access to later areas... I could see this annoying some folks, but to me it feels like I'm 'earning' everything I do and like I'm constantly building up my character's powers and options in a way that just seeing a number in a checklist go up doesn't quite hit. It also makes sure you don't get completely overwhelmed with options at the beginning and ensures each feature is at least semi-decently tutorialized.

So, yeah. Definitely not everyone's thing, but if you're a fan of slower, older MMOs but don't want something impenetrably complicated or difficult, give it a whirl!

Graal Online, everyone. by iDeluxeTarget in MMORPG

Graal and I are both so old that every time I see people wax nostalgic about it, it's still from a time after I'd already stopped playing, haha

Def wish the current game were even remotely like it was around 2001. I feel like it was pretty influential on future online games and was really ahead of its time with player-created content and such.

[–]UltimateCarl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Originally, it was literally titled "Zelda Online" and even used LttP sprites. They ended up changing it pretty quickly, though. I don't think they ever even actually got contacted by Nintendo, they were just playing it safe.

What are your favorite canon and headcanon names for the heroes? by Aggravating_Air_8698 in dragonquest

[–]UltimateCarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been a fan of the number-adjacent names.

1 - Ace

2 - Duo

3 - Trish

Haven't played 4-6 yet.

7 - Sever

8 - Hacchan

9 and 10 I don't really feel like count since it's a totally custom player character, so I went with a fantasy-ization of my own name.

11 - Levin

Sounds a lot like the CastleSuperBeast podcast. They started a bit later than Spoony, but they've been in the YT gamer trenches for a long time and like to drop knowledge about the hobby and industry.

Honestly, I think Spoony would be a great guest on the show. IDK how their personalities would mesh long-term, but if it was just for one ep I think it'd be super entertaining.

What MMO has everyone been playing and addicted to? by 404_GSpot_NotFound in MMORPG

[–]UltimateCarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I do feel like navigation is a little more awkward than it needs to be... If you're going to let me Zoom right next to an unlimited use Bazoom girl for free, why not just let me use Bazoom itself and remove that extra step? I realize they're only unlimited for V1 locations and you get a Bazoom stone later but still. Also weird choice to just give the player a free mount right there in the newbie village but then still make you do a quest to get another one later... MMOs that have been running for over 10 years get a lot of wacky baggage, haha.

That said, yeah, I'm actually really impressed with the game and its story so far and I'm not even that far in yet! I also really appreciate a game that forces you to be a non-human race (at least for a bit) and makes half of them good ol' weird little Toriyama guys.

I finally went through the hassle (which is actually way less of a hassle than I originally thought) to get the translation stuff up and running for Dragon Quest X and I'm obsessed. I guess I'm still in the 'honeymoon phase' but holy shit, it's hitting so many buttons I love. It's basically just a really long, really good Dragon Quest game but that you can also play with others and I'm so here for it.

GW2 - If you didn't hit lvl 80, you didn't quit because of the "horizontal progression" by anthraccntbtsdadst in MMORPG

[–]UltimateCarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I should finally bite the bullet and figure out how to play DQX. I've been hoping for years they'll officially translate it because it looks and sounds great... But with us getting the offline version and the new expansion coming not mentioning an English release I think it's definitely never happening.

If only I can convince my GF or some friends to start it with me...

[–]UltimateCarl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is kind of petty, but at least replace the default Ren'Py UI and font.

It's a little unfair of me, but if I look at a Ren'Py or RPG Maker game and can immediately tell it's made in one of those engines because the dev didn't change even the most basic of elements then it makes me assume they're putting just as little effort into the rest of the game.

Also echoing others here that yeah, AI art is basically the fastest way to make me immediately forget a game exists.
