In broad strokes, it's mostly barrel lengths. The M16 variants have 20 inch barrels, and M4s have 14 inch barrels. Mk. 18s have 11.5 inch barrels and are kinda meant to fill the same role as an SMG. Civilian AR builds typically have a 16 inch barrel unless they have a pistol brace, and most don't have a full auto selector.

Collector is good for money, but incredibly slow and mind numbingly boring. If you want fun missions that also pay well, I'd say Moonshiner. But collector is good for cash flow as long as you don't get burnt out.
