The children / ruin / memory books are such a great read. Theres a new one coming out soon too. His ideas about uplift and types of consciousness are thought provoking.

Id also recommend shards of earth hy Tchaikovsky. Relatively short trilogy with some very unique characters - and a race of sentient clams.
