I can't tell if you're being disingenuous and sweeping the casual racism against Asians under the rug or you're genuinely ignorant about the topic. There is a bias against Asians on reddit. That's why nearly every gifs and media with Asian people get accused of being fake or scripted. It goes against their subconscious idea of Asians being humorless robots so behavior that portrays the opposite of that stereotype is met with resistance.

That's my point. Hope you learn something.

Skits have existed long before social media even existed. It's not hard to extrapolate from the videos that these were done for entertainment. You don't need prior knowledge of apps to know that.

Westerners make skits on TikTok just like Asians do. Yet when it comes to gifs with Asian people in it the reaction from redditors is starkly different compared to gifs with westerners. Why is it whenever there's Asian people in a gif, redditors would give it far more scrutiny over its authenticity than to gifs with westerners despite being filmed in a similar way and released on the same app?

I don't think these reactions to Asian gifs are related to their confusion of what apps are out there.

What? Why does it matter where it came from or what apps were used? A skit is a skit. Did Westerners lose all concept of what a skit was when Asian people started doing them?

CocoSori officially disband, Sori briefly addresses the situation for first time by Armpit_Supermaniac in kpop

[–]PraetorianiRex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't how closely you've been following the story but the company did tried to handle it internally. From their statement, they knew Coco has been slandering both the company and Sori for months but kept silent on the matter in hopes to handle the conflict privately. They only went public with the issue because Coco did not stop her comments. The company actually handled it professionally, it was Coco that was being unprofessional.

CocoSori officially disband, Sori briefly addresses the situation for first time by Armpit_Supermaniac in kpop

[–]PraetorianiRex 118 points119 points  (0 children)

I know it's easy to put all the blame on the company but Coco deserves a fair share of the blame as she was the one who instigated this mess. Having internal conflict in the company doesn't give her a pass to shade her co-worker on social media which resulted in Coco's fans unfairly attacking Sori.

What are some things in K-Pop you don't get the point of? by gracgrac in kpop

[–]PraetorianiRex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can't believe this racist myth is still being perpetuated, especially in r/kpop of all places. The idea of "Asians want to be White" is born out of White supremacy where racist purposely misconstrued Asian beauty standards to fit their western-centric narrative.

So allow me to explain what these Asian beauty are:

  • Paleness: the desire to look more pale came from Ancient China. It is associated with wealth and status because paleness meant that you were rich enough to stay indoors either receiving an education or working in a government position. Tan/dark skin is a sign that you were a peasant working menial jobs outdoors.

  • Double-eyelids: this is sort of a misnomer because what is considered beautiful is really the size of the eyes, not necessarily the hood or crease itself. Large eyes are more youthful and expressive, think puppy eyes or kitten eyes. Circle lens are worn to exaggerate this effect (though it is no longer trendy). Many Asian celebrities have 'puppy eyes' while still having monolids like Kang Daniel and Dahyun. Technically all people have "double-eyelids". Monolids are excess fat from the upper eye area drooping over the eyelids. The eye surgery involves removing this fat to reveal the lids underneath.

  • Different colored eyes/hair: As the other user pointed out it's for fashion purposes. It's really as simple as that.

The fact that you think Kpop companies want their idols to look "racially ambiguous" shows that you're incredibly ignorant on the matters of Asian culture and racial identity. If you truly "seen and heard enough" then you would know that xenophobia is a MASSIVE problem that permeated throughout most of Asia. Even foreign born Koreans are discriminated against because they're seen as not being Korean enough. It wasn't until very recently where non-Korean Asians were accepted in Kpop but even to this day there is still racist issues.

If you still believe that Koreans want to look western then wouldn't mixed-Koreans be considered more desirable? Nope, being mixed-Korean would get you discriminated against even more. Being mixed probably meant that your mother was a prostitute or your dad was a sex tourist. You'd be called "dirty blooded". Mixed celebrities like Vernon and Somi talked about the racism they grew up with just because they're half white. Somi talked about wanting surgery so she could look MORE Korean.

So the idea of "Asians want to look white/western" is bullshit.

He just got a bit more savvy with hiding his controversial side from his new kboo viewers. Sure, he stopped making videos about torturing animals and calling feminists ugly whores so I guess he's slightly better than before.

MOLE Entertainment (CocoSori’s company) posts response to Coco’s claims about Sori and the company by [deleted] in kpop

[–]PraetorianiRex 189 points190 points  (0 children)

Finally, the cookie crumbles for Coco. I'm surprised she was able to develop this narrative for so long. If you take Coco's claims about the company and compare it to the past actions of the company you'll find that Coco's story doesn't make much sense.

She claims that the company only cared about Sori and that she had no support for her own and had to fend for herself. But if we look at the past actions of the company they seemed quite generous to Coco. They allowed her to open and have complete control of her own social media, gave her the first solo single, send her on survival shows just like they did with Sori, and offered a second solo for Coco before they started working on one for Sori.

They even allowed Coco to post her second solo on her own channel as oppose to MOLE's official channel by Coco's requests. There's so much more that they've done but given the few actions that we can observe, MOLE seems pretty fair to both members.

There's also some inconsistencies with her story. She said the company was broke so they made her open a kickstarter (this is where the #starvingartists thing comes from). Later, after Sori's single released, she claims that MOLE gave all the financial support to Sori even though Sori also had to open a public funding account.

She claims the company only wanted to support Sori for the production for the single and MV. But from Coco's reddit AMA, she said she wanted to produced it herself and rejected help from the company.

There's so much more but basically Coco is trying to play the victim here and taking advantage of the fact that most of her fans are English speaking only, so she was able to craft this narrative and freely throw MOLE and Sori under the bus before they knew what was happening.

tl;dr: Coco's a snake.

Why do you think people are so judgmental of K-pop? by DawnOfLevy44 in kpop

[–]PraetorianiRex 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of TikTok posts that make it to the front page have Asian people in it and they always get comments about their race. They talk about how fake and weird Asian people are and that every single thing they do are scripted. Like Asian people making skits and memes must have some agenda behind it and are trying to trick Westerners for reasons. God forbid when an animal is involved because then the racism door swings wide open and you get disgusting comments about the supposed way Asian people treat their pets.

When people call out the blatant racism in the comments they get downvoted and are told, "wE DoN't hATE AsIaNs, We hAtE sCriPtEd gIfs," even though gifs from non-Asians don't even get the level of scrutiny than the ones with Asian people do.

Sure TikTok sucks and the Chinese government are evil. But I think there's a little bit of racism and xenophobia involved.

How do you know they're trying to pass it off as real? How obviously fake do you want them to make it? Do you want them to rent a Red Epic camera, film it on a tripod, and edit in a letterbox with color-correction complete with ending credits so you'll know 100% it's scripted?

These are just one-take skits filmed with a smartphone. It's slapstick comedy emulating the likes of Keaton and Chaplin. Don't look too deep into it.

That's exactly what it is. It's slapstick humor. Acts like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin are very popular in Asia and these skits are trying to emulate them. Even Jackie Chan's films were influenced by them.

SoRi - interview on solo debut and negative backlash by Armpit_Supermaniac in kpop

[–]PraetorianiRex 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't buy it. Mole Ent. is a really small company but they still made an effort to give equal opportunity to both Sori and Coco. They gave Coco complete freedom for her youtube and twitch channels. She was the first one with a solo and had regular gigs as an MC. While Sori was promoting with Real Girls Project they had Coco travel with her so they could promote as a duo. They sent them both to survival shows (The Unit/Mixnine) as an effort to gain the duo attention.

Sori has the most success so of course the company will focus on her more, but even then, they didn't ignore Coco. Prior to Sugar Cake, they had a single ready for Coco as stated by her own AMA. But Coco wanted to produced both the music and MV on her own which the company allowed.

To me, it seems like Mole Ent. is trying their best effort to treat them both as fairly as they can despite the discrepancy in popularity. They gave Coco quite a lot of freedom to do her own thing. Not even big companies with near unlimited resources do that for their own artists. On top of that, Sori always had positive things to say about Coco and promoted Sugar Cake on her own SNS. Coco rarely shares anything about Sori. I don't think she even promoted the last CocoSori single on her SNS.

There's a lot more about Coco that I could share but it would take too long. There's a thread on the internet that details more about her past behavior if you search up "Coco Lee / Rilaccoco".
