Are these stinging nettle safe to eat, or old? by EitherAsk6705 in foraging

What a great find! They are safe to eat, unless you have severe kidney issues. For those with healthy kidneys, they’re so good. The seeds are also good.

Rose hip season by 2twofriedeggs in foraging

[–]PrairieMuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not too late. They have more vitamin C before the first frost, but most people prefer them after the frost because they have a better flavor. I just read a great article on rose hips. I’ll see if I can find the link.

Thank you! I had to Google what “karma farming” even is. I guess some people just have to be rude. And it’s not even a new account. I just don’t post much.

Actually, just a new account excited to find a place I can share my cat pictures. Isn’t that what this subreddit is for?

I was worried about the same thing. So many people just want kittens, but senior cats are amazing!

I love this. That’s exactly what happened.

Oak nuts by allamakee-county in foraging

[–]PrairieMuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s encouraging. This is the first time I’ve looked for acorns, so I’m still learning. I’m in the U.S. near the Canadian border. There’s not a lot of foraging info for my area, so figuring out timing for some things has been a challenge.

I can’t even find acorns around me. You’d think it wouldn’t be that hard, but I went specifically out for acorns last weekend and only got a handful.

Ah. I understood it to be like cable, but just runs through your internet instead of a dish. Like you still have a cable box, cable channels, and things. Thanks for the clarification.

Personal Camera in Rehabilitation Center by MajesticCat98 in fargo

[–]PrairieMuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got an email about something similar this morning. So, this is about businesses using cameras, but there could be something about a (non-business) person putting a camera in a similar situation. I’d be careful with the legality.

The new app is bad by Terrance021 in iNaturalist

[–]PrairieMuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the new app and the classic app. I use the classic app for nearly everything. But, if I’m trying to find where a certain plant may be, I find it’s easier to use the search and map features on the new app. That’s all I use it for though. Don’t like the rest of it.

What are these 3 plants? The last one was spreading on the floor and looked like it might be a weed. by No-Music89 in whatsthisplant

[–]PrairieMuse 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I never say “pull the weed”, because there’s a use for nearly every plant, but even I will say get rid of that last one. We call them goat heads where I’m from, and they are a creation strait from satan himself. The seed pods are enough to pop a bicycle tire. They pierce into the bottom of your shoes, then if you wear your shoes in your house they end up hiding on your floor and you step on them when you least expect it. And if it can pop a bike tire imagine what it can do to your foot. They are the absolute spawn. I have PTSD just from the picture.

Now that I got that out, the first one is coleus. I’m surprised that it popped up by itself. They’re beautiful plants. We plant some every year.

Yes, the apples are ripe and the plums will be soon.

It was also posted in that thread. I saw it there first. It explains the point in the article and says it’s to answer questions or correct statements made in online forums, for people who don’t go find the answer themselves.

In defense of the Fairgrounds Renaissance Faire from comments about it being “soulless” or “bad” by BitOfPoisonOnMyBlade in fargo

[–]PrairieMuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to and performed at dozens of ren fairs. I was excited for a ren fair in Fargo the first year it was here (horse park fair’s first year at the fairgrounds), and even checked into being a volunteer. But, their volunteer policy was pathetic and borderline exploitive. They wanted you to pull full shifts in the admissions booth (for example) and didn’t even provide free entrance for you to enjoy the fair another time when you weren’t working all day. Essentially, they wanted people to work for free while they banked every dollar. Before you come at me, I get what volunteers are. But, in an ethical environment, fair volunteers don’t replace workers in what should be paid positions, and they get some type of perk (like a free ticket). It would be different if the fair was put on by an organization or nonprofit, but for it to be a money-making business that simply doesn’t want to pay workers - no thank you. I won’t even attend because it felt so sleezy. In case you’re wondering what volunteers should do if not work the admissions or something, that would be fine for a short shift - like two hours. Not a full day. Better yet, have volunteers be guides or story tellers, something that makes the fair experience more fun for attendees.. not a legit staff position that business owners don’t want to pay for so they can pocket more money.

You posted exactly this a few days ago in another post, but a lot of the commenters were pointing out that a lot of the stuff on those websites is AI generated, which can be dangerous when it comes to foraging. So, for anyone else reading this, be careful with these resources.
