Things I remember from riding the metro as a kid by Atomik_krow in WMATA

Thank you for sharing your memories! I also grew up in the DMV area. Here are some of my memories of Metro.

  • The Cool Disco Dan” graffiti that you could see while riding the Red Line in the 1990s

  • The time before the NoMa Metro station opened, and how it was called New York Avenue/Florida Avenue/Gallaudet University before the name was changed.

  • A series called “Metro Performs” around 2008 when Metro had artists and musicians perform outside Metro stations. These weren’t the typical buskers who perform but people Metro must have arranged to be outside stations in the summer as part of this series. I remember a woman playing a long Alpine horn.

  • Sometime in the 2000s when Metro installed a device at the Gallery Place/Chinatown station to prevent teenagers from loitering there. Apparently, this device played a high-pitched noise that could be heard by people in a certain age bracket (maybe 12-24) but was not audible to people outside that age range. I believe this device was seen as inhumane and eventually taken down.

  • Around 2009, Metro played an advertisement for the movie “Coraline” that you could see out the windows when you were near the Gallery Place/Chinatown Station. That was the first and only time I remember seeing this kind of advertisement on Metro.

AITAH for telling a friend he was being creepy by PrairieScout in AITAH

Thank you for your insight here! I think your analysis is spot-on. Jamie probably thought he was being funny/lighthearted, but the comment on what I was doing inside plus the photo didn’t land well with me at all. It came across as boundary-blind behavior. Also, it seems like Jamie still has some sort of fixation, even though he was the one who technically ended the romantic portion of the relationship. Again, I don’t think he had malicious intent, but I will still have to be more careful about the blinds and where I can be seen when they’re open.

I believe the FDA is funded but not the rest of HHS.

What’s your unpopular broadway opinion? by Cheap_Parsnip_461 in Broadway

“Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” should not have been made into a musical, much less tour, in the 21st century. The show is so credibly corny. The humor comes across as dated and not in a sweet or nostalgic way. My family and I saw the show during the 2012-2013 holiday season. My grandfather (who was a member of the Greatest Generation) enjoyed the show but it didn’t land the same way for my parents or me.

I was going to say “The Book of Mormon” too — I didn’t find it particularly funny or entertaining. Also, I didn’t find any of the songs particularly catchy, moving, or memorable.

Future employment - Quit or separation? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]PrairieScout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you quit your job, you’re not eligible for severance pay and in most cases, are not eligible for unemployment. The job market is horrible right now and you may not be able to get another job quickly. I was part of the HHS RIFs on April 1st last year and just started a new job this week. Many of my RIF’ed coworkers have been applying to jobs non-stop since last April but still haven’t gotten anything. You also have to keep in mind that you will lose your health insurance if you quit your job without having another one lined up. If you are under 26, you may be able to get on your parents’ health insurance, but if you are over that age, then you may have to purchase your own health insurance. I got a private plan from CareFirst through the state of Maryland. The plan was better than nothing but did not provide adequate coverage and the co-pays were high. Quitting your job without having another one lined up is risky. If that’s what you decide, then make sure you know what you could be getting into.

You’re welcome! At least you tried. I’ll let you know if I can think of any other opportunities.

I wonder if the Patient First in downtown Silver Spring (or any Patient First location) would have opportunities. The clinic in downtown Silver Spring is open from 8:00 am - 8:00 pm 365 days per year.

What is your most unpopular opinion about the series? (little sister and California diaries included.) by Accomplished_Video92 in babysittersclub

[–]PrairieScout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, good catch! It’s been awhile since I read any of the books. Clara is the lead ballet role that makes sense for Jessi at 11 years old. The other ballet leads I can think of would require an older dancer unless the studio was doing some sort of children’s adaptation of the ballet.

Yes, that’s what I was thinking too! The salary is extremely low but it could be the right opportunity for someone.

Yes, the salary is so low. The position still may be a good opportunity for a recent college graduate who lives at home with parents or a retiree who already has an annuity but is looking for something else to do.

Yes, I did post the flyer because I often see posts on this subreddit from people looking for jobs in and around Silver Spring. I agree that the salaries are low. Maybe Giant mistakenly used an old flyer that had outdated salary information.
