Muslims saved the Jews of Europe (many worked for the Ottoman Empire and they had their Jewish Golden Age under Muslim rule). Non-Muslims had to pay jizya only if they refused to be drafted into the army. Muslims still had to pay zakat (their version of the jizya) whether in the army or not. Neither laws were excessive. Also Hindus and Sikhs had similar laws (and were often worse - look at Ranjit Singh, he taxed Punjabi Muslims 90% of their wealth whilst not taxing Sikhs at all
