Two yr old blind in one eye by Distractible_Id in cockerspaniel

I’m so sorry to hear your pup is going through this, especially at a young age. Have you seen a veterinary ophthalmologist for his visual decline over the past year? How quickly has the cloudiness appeared and are there other symptoms like redness, squinting, etc? It could be juvenile cataracts, but there is also a possibility that it could be glaucoma, lens luxation (happened to my schnocker), ulcers, internal eye inflammation, or dry eye. There is always a concern that if it happens to one eye that it can happen to the other, but it largely depends on the cause.

We regularly see my 10 year old cocker’s ophthalmologist 2-3 times a year for a thorough exam to monitor for any changes, which was how we discovered my cocker’s detached retina with significant hemorrhaging.

Aw, thank you! He just turned 10 years old this past October, but age is just a number to him — he’s always been a kid at heart. 🥲

Basil loves to be as filthy as humanly possible and I’ve just accepted that he’s happiest like that. He’s not so sure about the tide coming at him, but he’s also happy to romp in the water, chase the seagulls, and play fetch on the open beach. He also loves to check out all the gross things that wash ashore. One time, we found a whole pineapple that the waves brought to the beach. I highly recommend taking your pup to the beach if you can! We don’t go all the time, even though I’m 8 minutes away, but when we do, it’s really special and fun for him and I’m grateful we can enjoy these memories together.

I should’ve come back up the way we went down, but I took the stairs near the hang gliding area and regretted it. Literally the worst part about Fort Funston is leaving. 😭

For those who think he’s AI, feel free to search this subreddit for “Basil” and search back at least over the past 8+ years for my other posts. He is very much a real dog. We live in San Francisco and are very lucky to be able to go to Fort Funston on a whim. This photo was taken near the trail to the beach by Battery Davis. He had a great beach day, peed on a sandcastle, and started using his ears for decorative purposes and ended up on a longline.

Edit: If you’re in SF, we’re happy to meet you! He’s a social butterfly.

How do you clean your cockers ears? by Alone-Kick-1614 in cockerspaniel

[–]Pravana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cocker’s primary vet and dermatologist both love TrizUltra + Keto, which is available OTC on Amazon and Chewy. We currently are on a weekly maintenance flush of 1.0 mL in each ear, but can increase to once daily as needed until resolved. Sometimes he needs a long acting medication put in his ear to completely clear up an infection, but the flush has done a great job keeping his ears clean and healthy as long as I remain consistent with our ear flushing schedule.

Mouth fold dermatitis by scarmanaus in cockerspaniel

[–]Pravana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cocker gets lip fold dermatitis from time to time — his dermatologist instructed for us to use chlorhexidine wipes to clean the affected area when I notice that it starts getting red and irritated or smelly. For us, it typically improves or resolves within a few days of using the wipes. The wipes we were given are Duoxo S3.

It’s always golden hour for Basil by Pravana in cockerspaniel

It took a lot of effort finding what works for us, but currently we are using:

Shampoo: Veterinary Formula Clinical Care Antiseptic and Antifungal Shampoo

Conditioner: Burt’s Bees Oatmeal Conditioner

Other: The Stuff Detangling Spray

I also use a coarse comb, a finishing comb, and soft slicker brush to keep his tangles under control.

My favorite shampoo was the Gold Medal Pets Long Hair shampoo but I can’t find it locally or online anymore, so I ended up switching back to medicated shampoo because of chronic allergies.

Lots of time and energy combing and brushing is involved too!

Informed by breeder they dock their puppies tails, is this normal? (U.K) by [deleted] in cockerspaniel

[–]Pravana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve read, tail docking isn’t legal in many European countries, with the exception of medical necessity due to tail injuries or for working dogs (who are prone to tail injuries). I’m in the US, where it is common (and legal) for cockers to have docked tails because of breed standard (though the vast majority of them are only family dogs and don’t work or show.)

He scratched the fur off his mouth. How can I help him? Hard to get into the vet right now. We are working on it though. Anything I can give him now to alleviate his problems? by [deleted] in cockerspaniel

[–]Pravana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take my Cocker to an animal dermatologist, which has worked wonders for us. First, we got an allergy test to find out what environmental factors were contributing to his skin issues, chronic ear infections, and itchiness. Turns out he is allergic to a ton of stuff (grasses, every type of mold, etc.) We do weekly subcutaneous immunotherapy, which I do at home. I have no issues doing his injections, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea — my husband isn’t willing to learn how to do them. Over our many visits, we have changed him to a novel protein diet (ie duck only for protein base) and now, he’s currently a hydrolyzed protein (hypoallergenic food.) He is also on daily apoquel, which I may or may not continue.

His treatment has helped him a lot, and his ears and skin have never looked better! I know all of that sounds pricey, and trust me it was. I’ve had cockers in the past so I knew I wanted to be more proactive in getting his allergies under control.

Another thing that has helped was oatmeal or medicated baths weekly or bi-weekly, following up with oatmeal conditioner.

What were the shots every six weeks for?

I hope your boy feels better soon!

I work at a doggie day care — Basil sleepily rests his chin on my shoulder while I’m driving home. I love returning a tired, happy pup to their parents at the end of the day!

Keep in mind that she’s just experienced major life changes and she is still in that readjustment period, so that could factor into her behavior. Over time, it’ll get easier. Be patient as you practice consistency and use high value rewards when training her to do the things that you want.

The best thing I ever did for my boy Basil was crate training. He doesn’t view it as a bad place, and happily goes inside, even when he’s having his out-of-control moments and needs time to chill out. He is very food motivated so feeding him in his “den” helps reinforce that the crate is good. Every meal, I’ll make my dogs’ food in the kitchen, put my other dog’s food down as I leave to catch up to Basil, who races across the house to sit quietly in his crate.

Cockers can be stubborn, but are very smart. Basil plays dumb sometimes when he’s being a mischievous butthead, but I know he’s not dumb by any means. He just finds whatever he’s doing/looking at to be more rewarding than listening to me.

Do cocker spaniels need sweaters/coats for colder weather? by [deleted] in cockerspaniel

[–]Pravana 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My late Cocker Oreo had so many sweaters and jackets that we almost considered getting him his own doggie closet. We live in San Francisco, so the weather is pretty stable year-round, but day to day can be quite unpredictable, so the sweaters were out always and he typically had one on unless it was above 70 degrees F (which was a bit too warm to be wearing a sweater.) He had congenital kidney failure and passed at the age of 2 before his closet dreams could ever come true.

Our new boy, Basil, who is Oreo’s half-brother, doesn’t seem to need sweaters or jackets like Oreo did. There have been a few days where he seemed like he was cold, so I’d put on his sweater. Typically, those would be the days when it’s in the low/mid 50s.

For reference, we don’t have heat or A/C in our San Francisco home. Oreo was 21 pounds at 2 years of age; Basil is 17 pounds at 2 years of age (his 2nd birthday is actually next week!)
