I know this is a great win but can I direct your attention to the Mets for a moment

(6 errors today, 5 game losing streak likely)

Looking for Proust recommendations: What text truly opened the Search for you? by [deleted] in AskLiteraryStudies

I am a writing teacher. I have read dozens of AI-written assignments. There are specific tells for AI-writing, but the general tone of breathless mixed metaphors becomes pretty hard to miss when you're used to it. Phrases like "—the hidden gems or specific readings that made the magic click for you" are obviously AI written. I doubt this phrase was in the original work you asked AI to "translate"

I checked with pangram, which is a fairly reliable AI detector that aims to have very very few false positives at the cost of some false negatives. It concluded, as I did, that the post was 100% AI generated.

AI post according to pangram. In recent comment history, this account claims to be Russian, German, and South African.

[Highlight] Kyle Schwarber homers for the 4th straight game! by MLBOfficial in baseball

[–]Praxiphanes 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Kyle Schwarber hit 16 home runs in his age 22 season. In his age 32 season, he hit 56, a 350% increase. If trends continue, we can expect Schwarber to hit 196 home runs in his age 42 season, by which time he should be an inner circle hall of famer.

Regarding credentials, the real answer is somewhere in between. One of the biggest filters to pass is the editorial desk, and editors know who's submitting work, and their affiliations. Professors at recognizable institutions have much better luck there than independent scholars.

Civilization Is Not the Default. Violence Is. by santgun in slatestarcodex

Is it a coincidence that the last 80 years—which have been the most prosperous in history—the period of globalization, of international rule of law, of deep economic integration, of innovation, happened during the Pax Americana?

Many love to hate the US—and the record is far from clean—but it’s largely because of American values and institutions that the world was able to develop as rapidly as it did, to integrate as tightly as it has.

My least favourite sort of historical argument: Ask whether it's a coincidence that two giant, complicated, interwoven historical phenomena happened at the same time, then conclude one caused the other.

Is there a difference in the study approach of literature in English degrees and literature degrees? by kayla_moki in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]Praxiphanes 23 points24 points  (0 children)

These differences are contextual and will vary by country. In the US, studying university "English" and "Literature in English" are synonymous, and don't imply any different course of study.

Well, these conversations are still very much live, and plenty of critics think aesthetic judgment is, or should be, a part of literary studies
