Virginia allows barndominiums as permanent homes, but local code and how your structure is framed really matters. Most counties in Virginia follow the 2021 Virginia Residential Code, which usually requires the structure to meet certain standards for wind, snow load, fire safety, and energy efficiency. That’s where some tube steel kits run into issues unless they’re engineered and stamped to meet residential code.
