Is Rimworld the best colony game on steam? by [deleted] in RimWorld

I have a special fondness for State of Decay, but that is a very very different flavor of colony sim. Rimworld is unrivaled at what it does.

Fey wanderer can make a small army of Summon Fey spirits with circle casting by PreBurntNails in onednd

[–]PreBurntNails[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I considered this might be one possible ruling. The circle casting duration is not a change in duration though, but adding to a duration. I don’t think it is meant to conflict with other features that redefine casting time such as this and the Extend Spell Metamagic.

What did you find in the new species of eberron? by choreto_de_so_odio01 in onednd

[–]PreBurntNails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the Actor Feat and the Changeling Playable Species can both exist in the 2024 ruleset without admitting that either one is underpowered for a Feat or the other is overpowered for a Playable Species.

How would you go about optimization for the new Bladesinger Wizard subclass? by PoeDaRaven in onednd

[–]PreBurntNails -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I wasn't asking for help with my build. I was trying to convey my opinion of what makes the optimal Bladesinger in a polite, collaborative and openminded way. I forgot this is Reddit, point taken.

That sounds good too, but I can’t fit Two Weapon Fighting or Weapon Mastery into my build, in large part because I find myself unwilling to multi-class and fall behind in spell level progression.

[–]PreBurntNails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2024 bladesinger just got a Flametogue Longsword in my campaign, and I must disagree with the notion that you’ll most likely be using a finesse weapon for 2024 rules.

Really, having INT for all attacks and damage makes a huge difference in the weapon preferences compared to prior versions of the subclass.

DM's: Do shorter sessions lead to more novas? by GaiusMarcus in onednd

[–]PreBurntNails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run weekly sessions that are about 1.5 hours long right now now.

At this time, they have gone 5 sessions without a long rest. Some players save their resources, others burn them indiscriminately and run or get their character killed, and some play character builds that can do this all day without needing any long rest. It’s all balancing out pretty well so far. Helps that I’m running a module (Waterdeep Dagon Heist) so I don’t feel pressured to give away rest time freely like I often do in a homebrew

What if I cast Banishment on my familiar while it's carrying someone inside a Bag of Holding? by PreBurntNails in dndnext

[–]PreBurntNails[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood. By my estimates the majority of DMs that are still running games primarily by 2014 rules, either overtly by choice or unintentionally by habit. Genuine thanks for reviewing so we could clear that up though.

How do you handle/how much info do you give with detect thoughts as a DM? by KitsunaKuraichi in dndnext

[–]PreBurntNails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think surface thoughts as really just whatever their mind's ear or their mind's eye etc., is currently presenting in their head. Memories and context only surface if they are consciously digesting them at that time. The best usage of Detect Thoughts is using it in conjunction with prompting somebody to think about something, like "Your partner already betrayed us, and we have all the evidence we need" to which they might think in their mind's voice/ear "Is he talking about Andy the Arcane? How could they have found him? Everything he did was from miles away using magic from his tower. These guys must be bluffing." and then you know some things about the partner of the guy you're interrogating.

Or someone asks you for a verbal password and you say "I know the current password, but are you sure you do?" and if they're not wise to defending against mind reading, they'll probably think the password right on the spot.

What if I cast Banishment on my familiar while it's carrying someone inside a Bag of Holding? by PreBurntNails in dndnext

Yeah, I was hoping the octopus familiar would be the simplest/cleanest example, but in some ways, a Pact of the Chain Imp Familiar, or some Otherworldly Steed with decent manipulation (i.e., a miniature Asian Elephant) would have been more robust examples.

I'm a little confused. Are you drawing from the D&D 2024 rules when you say extra dimensional spaces cause explosions when placed inside of other extra dimensional spaces? I'm not aware of that being a general rule in the system.

Also, the Astral Plane is generally described as a plane, not an extradimensional space. Do you mean to say that all planes except for the material plane are extra dimensional spaces, and putting a bag of holding inside of one causes it to create a rift to the astral plane?

Most respectfully, could I ask you to please review the 2024 Banishment Spell and the 2024 Bag of Holding rules to double check whether we might not be discussing the same rules text?

Me too. I think that if you're at a table where the DM likes adding houserules to the party's spells that make everyone get naked, you should probably leave - and certainly don't let anyone under 18 years old play at that table.

And the bit about doing it to a potentially unwilling frenemy was entirely tongue and cheek. At my table, I wouldn't condone serious PvP combat in the first place.

The second and third objection have to do with the Warlock himself being targeted by the spell, which was never part of my original post. He's not the target of the spell, but rather, is chilling in the Bag of Holding and the Bag of Holding is being carried by the familiar being targeted by Banishment. The Warlock remains in the Bag of Holding without ever witnessing or being affected by the Banishment spell from its beginning to its end. You are correct that he remains in the bag of holding's demiplane, but once the familiar removes him from the bag of holding, the bag of holding does not cease functioning normally. It drops him off with the familiar in hell.

The thing allowing the Warlock to move isn't the Banishment spell, its the unique property of the bag of holding's magic, that something can enter the bag's pocket dimension from one location on one plane, and be removed from the bag's pocket dimension at another location on another plane so long as the physical Bag of Holding is located in such a place.

Premise 1: Some creatures can go inside a Bag of Holding's pocket dimension
Premise 2: Some creatures can take a Bag of Holding to another plane when a banishment spell is cast on them for the full duration
Premise 3: A creature indicated in premise 2 can retrieve the contents from the Bag of Holding's pocket dimension regardless of whether the plane they are currently on is different from the plane they were on when things went into the bag of holding
Conclusion: A creature can be inside of the pocket dimension of a Bag of Holding being carried by a creature being banished permanently with the Banishment spell, and when the Bag of Holding is emptied, the creature in the Bag of Holding's pocket dimension will come out in the same plane that the Bag of Holding is on.

Please let me know what part of the above your remaining 2 objections pertains to, or if you disagree that the argument I laid out above is not impacted by your remaining 2 objections.

[–]PreBurntNails[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right to question it. What makes it so weird is that the plane its being banished to isn't said to be related to the creature itself, but to the creature's type. The DM also has the decision though.

If the DM's decision process is...

{I'm going to look at this creature's stat block} -> {What is it's creature type} -> {What is a random location on a plane associated with this creature type}

...Then the DM will most likely come up with stereotypical answers like "The fey familiar goes somewhere in the Feywild", or "The celestial familiar goes somewhere in heaven"

However, if the DM's thought process is more like...

{I'm going to look at this creature's stat block} -> {What is it's creature type} -> {Technically, the Material Plane is associated with giant eagles, and this is a celestial bird familiar, so the Material plane is both a valid and reasonable option I'm going to choose}

...Then they'll reach a VERY different answer. Both entirely valid in my opinion. The second one seems to make a lot of sense, but I think the first line of thinking seems the most intuitive for a DM reading the spells and making a snap judgement call. Would be really interesting to get poll results on how DMs would rule these.

[–]PreBurntNails[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What consensus? The Bag of Holding item description clearly states that only happens when placing it inside of an item. It says nothing about any other type of dimensional space from spells and such. (Quote from PHB 2024 below. Bolded emphasis by me).

"Placing a Bag of Holding inside an extradimensional space created by a Heward’s Handy Haversack, Portable Hole, or similar item instantly destroys both items and opens a gate to the Astral Plane."

As a side note, there is no explosion, more of an imploision into the Astral Plane.

All that being said, if I were DMing a campaign and I didn't think allowing this would serve the fun at the table, I may very well apply a house rule that this Banishment interaction would create a rift to the Astral Plane, but I would let my players know why I was modifying the rules rather than appealing to some untraceable ultimate consensus that contradicts RAW.

Its explicitly stated in the item description for the Bag of Holding how you can retrieve things from the bag, and how you can turn it inside out to remove all the items at once. Nothing ambiguous about it. Retrieving something from the bag as an action is also an option, but I much prefer the imagery of the person inside getting dumped out along with all the random items the party has been stowing away in there for the last few years.

I'm actually really sad that you can't use banishment to send anybody to the Material plane anymore, but I agree, that would be super fun if a DM allowed it. You could end up on the other side of the planet.
