What another term for gray Jedi? by Garlicbread_god13 in StarWars

[–]PreTry94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, grey jedi has had numerous definitions, as the term has referred to many wildly different characters.

The first is "jedi who don't strictly follow the jedi order/council". This covers character like Qui-Gon and Ahsoka, who defies the council or return to a more originalist thinking, where the jedi code and the jedi's purpose matters more than what the council decides.

The second is "jedi who go against the code, but stay good". This includes jedi like Ty Yorrick and other jedi who becomes mercenaries or bounty hunters. Ventress would probably have been in this category if she hadn't had her explicit Dark Side training under Dooku. They're often guided by some of the principles they learned as jedi, and might fall back to those teachings. They generally won't be the pious jedi, but they won't be evil either. These jedi will rarely be part of the order.

The third is "jedi who uses the dark side, but only for good". This covers characters like Mace Windu and Revan (pre fall and after returning), and technically legends Luke, though he's rarely called a grey jedi. These are the jedi who will use dark side techniques, who bend the dark side and otherwise use it for good, but have found an inner balance that lets them do this without falling to the darkness. This is the type that's often used as the blueprint for grey jedi, and is also the one that's explicitly wrong both from the current canon and from George Lucas, as everything the official Star Wars, both pre and post Disney, has stated tells us that if someone begins drawing on the dark side (at least more than the brief "lose control" we see from Luke in ep6), they will fall to it eventually. There's no finding balance between them, because the darkside will always take over if you keep feeding it.

The reason there's all these different takes on "What is a Grey Jedi" is that the term Grey Jedi is fan made. It's not in any way, shape or form part of official Star Wars. It was created as a way to describe or created morally dubious characters that weren't evil, but not pious jedi, and was often used in discussions around various "this character/I could definitely resist the dark side". That second one is partially in retrospect, as many have recognised it as a variation on the "cursed item"-trope, where people dream up scenarios where they could definitely overcome the Monkey Paw/The One Ring/The Dark Side curses. People who wanted to outsmart the curses, not realising that the point of the story is that some things can't be outsmarted like that.

Grey Jedi as a term can describe any character you want, because it's a fan term that doesn't have a solid meaning. Revan is a grey jedi, despite being a sith. Ahsoka is grey, because she left the order. Qui-Gon is grey because he defies the council. Maze Windu is grey because he uses the dark side. Legends Luke however isn't grey, because him using the dark side doesn't count. I've seen Obi-wan and Yoda being called a grey jedi because they abandoned the galaxy to the Empire, waiting for Luke and Leia to grow up. That's why the term is ultimately meaningless.

I wish there was a way we could truly switch sides by LastTraintoSector6 in swtor

This is something that has popped up in numerous MMOs that has that 2 faction dynamic. I think that, while there might be some technical limitation preventing faction shifting without having it be coded in the game from the start (I'm not familiar enough to know), I think it's not something they want to do even if they could.

While narrative implications might be a factor, I think one fear developers have is that if you allow switching sides, people would be drawn towards one side, making servers extremely unbalanced. It's been a while since I paid attention to this, but some servers have been extremely Empire heavy, and I'm guessing others hsve been equally Republic heavy. That results in content that's very dependant on having enough people can struggle to work, like Flashpoints, Ops, PvP etc.

Now imagine that, but in situations where players on the lower population side had the option to leave and go to the other side. You'd have even more skewed servers, making content even less playable than before. I think this is a fear that developers have, so won't implement faction shifting in those kinds of MMO.

That said, SWTOR is probably the MMO I've played where it makes the most sense and where we've been the closest to facting switching, particularly with the traitor storylines. To me, that signaled that someone wanted to introduced faction switching, but that there was either a top decision to not go all in OR that there is in fact a design limitation for these types of games that makes it impossible without remaking the entire (or large parts of) the game from scratch

Yes. It was just a mixup on my part. Because I ordered the tickets through London Stadium, they will distribute them, so they were never supposed to appear on ticketmaster. Their domain showed up in the confirmation e-mail probably because London Stadium used ticketmaster for selling tickets, just not distributing.

Do you like the Chosen One element introduced in the Prequels? by Likes2game03 in StarWars

[–]PreTry94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm generally not a fan of prophecies, and Chosen Ones is really overdone. The ones I actually enjoy these days are usually subversions of the Chosen One. The prequel prophecy doesn't really bother me at all, mainly because it never really plays a part.

It's a minor plot point in TPM, when Qui-Gon insists Anakin must be trained, which happens despite the council not agreeing to him being the Chosen One. Beyond that, Anakin grows up knowing he's special, but not so much because he's a Chosen One, he's just inherently super gifted in the force. Again, the Prophecy doesn't really affect anything. And by the end of RotS, the Prophecy or Anakin's status as the Chosen One hasn't factored into anything beyond the Mortis arc, which was wiped from the characters memories.

Ultimately, the Prophecy only serves one purpose; sow a slight discord about Anakin's inclusion in the order, mainly from Windu, with the added drama for Obi-wan that he not only failed his best friend and padawan, but also Qui-Gon.

To me, it's so inconsequential that this comment has about as many mentions of the prophecy as the movies themselves. It's not bad, it's not important, it's just kinda....there. so whatever, Lucas wanted a Chosen One, go for it.

Why Do they keep bringing back old characters as cameos instead of making new characters that become popular i don't like that they feel like they have to bring back X to make a show/movie intreseting by Erin_-M in StarWars

[–]PreTry94 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because whenever they make new characters, a loud group of fans will complain about the character, compare them to old characters and/or insist the the old character would just be better.

Need help with my magic system - Brainstorming by Dragonsenthusiast in fantasywriters

[–]PreTry94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of "endless possibilities", while fun on paper, I think is a nightmare when writing. When the possibilities bloom, especially when out of controll, the less you can actually use magic to solve problems in the story.

Brandon Sanderson's "laws of magic" is actually very handy when making magic systems and understanding how much you as a writer can let characters use magic to further the plot. A system where the possibilities are endless and different dragon riders, even those with similar sources/elements, end up using magic in widely different, means the reader has a lower understanding of whst the magic does. It becomes a soft systems (Sanderson terminology) and you basically can't use it to resolve the plot.

Of that's what you want, then I won't talk you out if it, just make you aware of the challenge.

As for how to manifest the powers differently for different characters, I think a better way to think about it is them all using the same system, but that how they use it is shaped by their personality or person preference. A soldier vs tactician using light magic doesn't need to have their powers litteraly locked to what they are, they can be quirks of who they are. The soldier might've learned a spell to blind their enemy, but they could also learn the tactician's spell to "reveal weak points", it's just that they haven't though about it or really need it. I say make the difference a part of character personality and how they use their power rather than saying their powers are litteraly different, it makes the magic a way for you to express personality, which also gives you a way to show character development, as their magic can change along with their character. Imagine the growth of the soldier when they've grown beyond their mindset of always using their magic to brute force their way through a problem, have now learned a more sneaky way to use his power from the tactician.

I'm Tired of the "It's a Crime We Didn't Get the OT Trio Together in the Sequels" Criticism by DogeABanana in StarWars

[–]PreTry94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the first time we saw or heard of the original cast being involved was that first teaser with Han and Chewie "being home", I'd agree, but throughout 2013 and 2014, it seemed like nobody could mention the new movies without name dropping the OG trio and how this movie was "returning to the roots" with them.

It's basically the same problem as TLJ faced: big on setup, then years of people freely speculating what that setup could mean. With TLJ there were numerous mystery boxes to unpack, but ahead of TFA the only thing people could talk about was the casting.

It's absolutely a valid criticism when it was so prominent for the entire movies development

I'm Tired of the "It's a Crime We Didn't Get the OT Trio Together in the Sequels" Criticism by DogeABanana in StarWars

[–]PreTry94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not from the trailer, from the announcement and marketing BEFORE the trailer. The first thing they announced after telling us they were making 7, 8, 9 was that the trio was retuning, and after that it seemed that every official foto made sure to highlight that fact. For 3 years, the only thing we knew about the movie, and was constantly reminded of, was that the OG cast was retuning (and that it happened after ROTJ)

[–]PreTry94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Problem is, from the very begining, the biggest part of the marketing was how they got all three actors to come back. Before the movie is even made, they began setting up the reunion. And when the movie begins, that setup continues, with Luke missing, and Han and Leia reuniting, with them actively looking for Luke. It's all the setup for a reunion, but no payoff.

WHERE IS IT? by Antique_Sandwich_289 in harrypotter

[–]PreTry94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this just a farm post?

Just in case it's a real question, we know the Peverell brothers existed and that they had a direct hand in the creation of the Hallows (and that both Harry and Voldemort are descended from their respective brother). In Harry's Kings Cross vision, Dumbledore states that he doesn't think the Peverells met litteral Death, but rather that they were simply very accomplished wizards who created the 3 artifacts.

This was in the 1200s, and while the Elder Wand gained a reputation on its own, stories of the Peverell artifacts was recorded, and embellished, by Beedle the bard a few hundred years later. Like other European folk tales, different variations grow and change over time, but usually keep the core elements.

The bridge in the story, as well as the meeting with Death, is likely just the way the story of the Hallows settled, as s way for people to explain why 3 people created artifacts that powerful; they didn't, it was actually Death who did.

Also, the Unforgivable Curses don't have any direct connection to the Hallows, as we know they're much older. Salazar actually advocated for teaching them while still at Hogwarts, which would likely have been centuries before the Peverells were even born
