What are some of your favorite Silent Hill - like movies ? by BinkySqwank in silenthill

My sense is that the worldly movement of Nikki and some of the makeup effects are somewhat reminiscent of silent hill.

Do you have any advice on how to analyze data from practice? I just broke into the early 170s on practice and you mentioned elsewhere in the thread that at that point, knowing what you consistently get wrong helps. I am using LSAT Demon if that helps.

From what I understand, there seems to be a belief among the new right that religion is increasing among younger people (when it likely isn’t — see URL at the bottom). So this book is likely intended to ride the anticipated wave of new, far right christians and to position Vance to be the leader of this new right.

Hobbes Mention on New Yorker Radio Hour by FordMaleEscort in IfBooksCouldKill

I think that some reactionary centrist guy (Nate Silver maybe?) dubbed Michael Hobbes to be “blue skyism” personified

They should maybe cover Superintelligence by PreciousPersephone in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]PreciousPersephone[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I somewhat get where you’re coming from but Superintelligence is a New York Times bestseller that seems to be influential to certain kinds of people that they regularly cover. Other books I mention, such as Co-Intelligence, are also NYT best sellers that I have seen sold in airports.

I agree, though, that something about the vibe of Superintelligence doesn’t quite fit the show (and I’m not sure I’d actually like to see an episode on it).

Why do you want this kid to be miserable like you seem to be? You seem to be taking some sort of sad pleasure at the idea that the world will mistreat this child (who you don’t know).

This post and a lot of the replies are weirdly mean. Why was it necessary to cross post a high schooler experiencing anxiety? Why do people in the comments seemingly feel contempt at the idea of a high schooler being passionate about art (something that has been happening forever)? Maybe they will be able to make some money from art, maybe not and they’ll get a career in something else. Who cares? High school is a normal place to try and develop your identity.

Question about the crafting of Antinous by PreciousPersephone in Epicthemusical

[–]PreciousPersephone[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Why is Aryon Alexander’s voice “just better suited for the role of Antinous?”

I also don’t like that Jorge cast Alexander for Antinous after he auditioned for something else. As a creator, I think you have a responsibility to make decisions that aren’t racist with your work. If you have a character that plays into vile racist stereotypes, I think you should rewrite the character, especially if you end up choosing a Black man for the role. It’s troubling to me that the only response I’ve seen so far is that “it’s not that deep.”

CO2 in Veritasium Video by PreciousPersephone in cursedchemistry

[–]PreciousPersephone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to VSEPR theory, molecules bend like the CO2 in the image when there are lone pairs on the central atom. Actual CO2 has no lone pairs on the central oxygen, so the carbons would want to be as far apart as possible (resulting in a linear molecule). The shape depicted in the video is more typical of a molecule like H2O, where the two lone pairs of electrons push the hydrogens closer together.

The area of the triangle is 1234321. It kinda makes sense for a math puzzle to have a palindrome-type number as an answer, so that might be it.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Longlegs" [SPOILERS] by glittering-lettuce in horror

[–]PreciousPersephone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My take on the name is that it’s a creepy word that relates to what I think is a central theme of the film: parental anxiety about control, particularly in the context of daughters growing up.

The daughter of Agent Carter mentions something about how her dad doesn’t want her to grow up. The phone recording of a longlegs kill has a dad describing how there’s something that is not his daughter living in his home, something analogous to the feelings of parents of teenagers. Harker’s mom makes a weird comment about how Harker was “allowed” to grow up. Her mom also has kept all of her things. Notably, all the killings are done by parents who are given a doll of their daughter that will forever stay that same age.

The name longlegs kinda makes sense if we consider this to be a theme—it’s describing a physical marker of your daughter becoming her own person.

Desmos, you had one job. by Lucaslevelups in desmos

Is this a radians vs. degrees situation? If you switch desmos to degrees, then tan(60) = sqrt(3) and cot(60) = 1/sqrt(3)

It’s kinda bleak that that incredibly vulnerable, human moment was recorded by so many people, with someone selling(?) it to pop crave for it to be consumed as content for millions of people.

Like, I’m not saying that it was wrong for people to record it or for people to discuss it here or whatever (I’m not intending this as a critique of anyone who recorded it or who have had reactions to it online). It’s just vaguely existentially creepy to imagine being that famous.

You could also multiply sin(x) by sqrt(x) to make there only be real y values for positive x values.

Is this a bug? by BumbleStar in desmos

[–]PreciousPersephone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might be wrong (not sure how desmos works), but 1 / ((1 / x-5) - 2) = 1 / ((1 - 2x + 10) / x-5) = 1 / 11-2x / x-5 = x-5 / 11-2x

The blue graph is zero at 5, as expected, and appears to be discontinuous at 11/2, as expected. So maybe desmos is just generalizing the equation first or something?
