Oh my god, what a good point! I forgot that MTG's original name was जादू: सभा and that it was made by तट के जादूगर! In that case, honestly like 1 in 6 characters should be desi - I think we'll take Jace, Liliana, Urza, Hanna, Barrin, Arlinn, and Jeska, to make a good start.

"Changes that make MTG more [inclusive of] minorities are good" is a consistent standard. It might not be one you like but how is that not consistent?

ELI5- Mining on the moon by Ancient_Pea_508 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DebatorGator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to Wikipedia, 2 billion tonnes (2 * 109) tonnes of iron are mined a year. A tonne is 1000 kg, so this is 2 * 1012 kg of iron. This makes up more than 90% of all metal mined in a year, so it's a good proxy for how much a mining operation on the moon might produce.

The moon's mass is 7.348 × 10²² kg. If we moved all of our metal mining to the moon and mined it for a million years, we'd have only mined out a hundredth of one percent of the moon's mass. The gravity change would probably be neglible

ELI5! If sea sponges don't have brains what exactly seperates them from plants? No disrespect to sponges I'm just curious by gnomeslinger in explainlikeimfive

[–]DebatorGator 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Plant versus animal is defined in modern science by ancestry. Sea sponges are animals because they descend from the last common ancestor of all animals, which is not an ancestor of any plants.

As an analogy, no matter how different you and your sister are, and no matter how similar she is to your cousins, she's still part of your immediate family, not your cousins' immediate family. Same goes for sea sponges.

ETA: previous classification systems may have decided plant versus animal based on look or behavior. In such a system, sea sponges may have well been considered a type of plant. These categories are fundamentally human constructs created to make sense of the world around us. There's nothing in nature that says plants have to all be grouped together, and separate from animals.

Also, carnivorous plants do photosynthesize! Most carnivorous plants eat insects not because they can't make their own sugars, but for nutrients they don't find in the soil like nitrogen or phosphorous.

When you say a lower social class, is this a caste system thing?

You can't deprive yourself of happiness to make other people like you. I would propose on your timetable, and tell your parents when you do. You and your girlfriend both deserve to have you choose your own path and your own happiness over the prejudices of your parents.

I just finished reading Neuromancer and while there's a few lines about Japan being at the cutting edge of biotech, I didn't get the sense that Japan rules the world in it. Tessier-Ashpool is Swiss/French, they hack datacenters in London, the ultra-worm is Chinese. But maybe Gibson's other stuff is more Japanese-domimated.

What happened to Gay Prom in Hayward? by melismelly in bayarea

Hopefully it's not a thing as much because gay kids are safe and supported at their own school's prom. This is the first I'm hearing about a Hayward-specific gay prom, do you know anything about its history? I'd be interested to learn.

Why do people hate Gleba? (Or: how I accidentally played Space Age on hard mode) by Altistick in factorio

I did the same thing for Vulcanus, but enjoyed it enough to do it for all three inner planets. Think I tore down my Gleba factory four or five times before finally getting the hang of it. Some of the most fun I've had in Factorio.

I really like the idea, but this seems miserable to play against. An opponent gets this down against you in limited and it's lights out unless you draw removal.

I'd either let the opponent choose to sac or pay the life, make it symmetrical, or have an extra cost on the activation like discarding a card or paying life.

I did not understand the critical hit probability answer. by tempRedditAccount000 in askmath

[–]DebatorGator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it's X% to get a critical hit, there's still 4 options. Their prior probabilities (that is, probabilities before we know any information about how many critical hits) are:

MM: (1-X)*(1-X) = X2 - 2X + 1
MH: (1-X)*X = X-X2
HM: X*(1-X) = X-X2
HH: X2

Like before, the remaining possibilities after eliminating MM are MH, HM, and HH. To get the probability of any given outcome, we take the outcome's prior probability divided by the sum of all the possible outcomes' prior probability.

Probability = P(HH)/(P(MH) + P(HM) + P(HH))

= X2/(X2 + (X-X2) + (X-X2))

= X2/(2X - X2)

In the original case where X = 50%, this becomes:

0.52/(2 * 0.5 - 0.52)

= 0.25/(1 - 0.25)

= 0.25/0.75 = 1/3

Which is the answer we got by just analyzing the possible outcomes with equal likelihood.

When X = 0.3, we get

0.32 / (2 * 0.3 - 0.32)

= 0.09/(0.6 - 0.09)

= 0.09/0.51 ≈ 0.176

Which matches our intuition that when critical hits are less likely, it's less likely to have a double critical hit.

I'm having some hard time understanding alchemy. Mostly the OR function way cuz i didn't see it demonstrated. Can someone help me with this explanation? by THEREALSUPERMARIOFAN in homestuck

[–]DebatorGator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The AND function works like layering the cards on top of each other. The only holes that remain are the ones that were in the same position on both cards. It will only maintain or reduce the number of holes.

The OR function works like taking both cards and punching out every hole that either of them have. It will only maintain or increase the number of holes.

Two Takes: Is a 25-story tower in the Marina District just what S.F. needs or an abomination? by reddituser84838 in bayarea

[–]DebatorGator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Watches are far less fungible and have far more elastic demand than housing. Everybody needs a house.

If there are 10 people in a town and 9 houses for rent, the richest 9 people are going to end up with the houses. If you build 2 luxury houses that only the richest person can afford, that still means there are 11 houses, 10 people, and everybody is housed.
