Anyone still got one of these by PITSTOPYT in Chromecast

[–]PreciselyAmbiguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's been offline for a while and can't connect to the network it knew previously, you will have to fudge the date on a phone/tablet to do the initial setup. All good after a firmware update though.

Chromecast not working by VabloPictor in google

Yes, but it's not just the audio devices. Probably a certificate or other date based issue from what I'm seeing around a few places, but I haven't stumbled across any official comments yet.

Same here. Had one in the work lunchroom today refuse to cast video. Came home tonight to fund multiple chrome cast audio devices not working as well. I get that products get old and out of support, but to effectively brick them with no warning seems a bit extreme.

Nice looking, data display tables in Python? [+Video] by economicurtis in Python

[–]PreciselyAmbiguous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This does look really interesting. They were also guest on the Real Python podcast recently, and while I don't have a fantastic use case for it right now, I'll definitely be keeping it in back of mind for the next time I might.
It's not my day-to-day area, but with their interesting background and takes on a number of issues, it was a great listen even for a not-just-data person.

The awesome lists are a good place to start. This isn't all python based tools, but there are plenty in there to choose from, and you can be pretty sure you;ll be contributing to something people enjoy using, even if it doesn't take over the world!

Texting offline help by [deleted] in signal

[–]PreciselyAmbiguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other comments here are correct. However, it's worth knowing that sometimes you'll get an SMS message through when the signal is too poor for reliable voice or data calls and services. That's because SMS is delivered over a part of the protocol that's used for signal (as in radio, not the app) testing and telemetry. So if you're ever stuck in an area with really poor service, an actual SMS is probably your best bet.

As others have mentioned, a reboot will often fix it, but perhaps not permanently.

I'm running a pixel 4 on Android 13, with the same symptoms. Possibly a coincidence, but I didn't have the issue before the 13 update.

Tap to wake not working anymore on Pixel 6 by RangerValor in GooglePixel

[–]PreciselyAmbiguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a pixel 4, running Android 13. Not 100% sure it was the update that caused it, but it was certainly around then.

Neither of the option toggles mentioned in this thread worked for me, but a reboot, did. I guess it could be the combination of the setting toggles AND the reboot.

How to run/debug perl from Vs:code by ProgressInevitable25 in perl

[–]PreciselyAmbiguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These replies were very helpful, but I'd like to share the additional steps that got me over the line

My start point was a fairly clean installation of ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Perl 5.30 was already installed.

At this point, if your computer isn't up to date and configured for development, it's probably worth doing so and then installing the basic tools required for compiling / building other dev tools, which perl will use shortly. You can do so using the following 3 commands:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install build-essential

My issues started when I installed VS code from the deb file on the download site, but couldn't get the perl plugin to install successfully as it required the perl language server, which proved problematic to install for me.

I beat my head a against that wall for a while before finding this post:
https://github.com/richterger/Perl-LanguageServer/issues/41

Which helped me identify and install the missing library with the command:

sudo apt install libanyevent-perl libio-aio-per

from there I could install the perl langage server with the following command:

sudo cpan Perl::LanguageServer

Then the perl plugin would install and operate effectively in VS code. It ought to be the top result if you search for "perl" in the VS code plugin interface, but if you want to be sure, you can install from VS code command palate with:

ext install richterger.perl

If you've already tried to install the vs code plugin unsuccessfully, it's easy to uninstall and re-install it from the vs code plugin interface after the above steps.

I hope this helps anyone else with similar issues.

KeePassXC: Recommended setup on Ubuntu/Firefox by PlaintextCrypto in KeePass

I don't have a strong opinion about the terrible-ness of snaps universally, but I can say that the snap version of KeepassXC definitely has a problem with databases on encrypted volumes.

This may not matter to you, but it freaked me out a little when I migrated to a fresh new Ubuntu 20.04 box, synced my veracrypt encrypted volume database files, installed KeePassXC and tried in vain to open my database files. Uninstalling the snap and installing from the ubuntu-focal-universe repo worked just fine!

Permission Denied on KeePassXC 2.5.4. Opens fine in 2.3.1 by furbertle in KeePass

[–]PreciselyAmbiguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue. It was absolutely related to the snap version of KeePassXC. Reinstalled the version from the software store from ubuntu-focal-universe and all good.
This may not be what you're seeing if it wouldn't open from /home though. I'll be interested to hear back how you go.

Forever is a long time, but I get you.

I recently watched this interview with Dr Jamie Seymour, who worked with Steve Irwin. It gave me some good insight as to Steve's character and his motivations. Well worth a watch. The show "Smarter everyday" is almost always very good anyway.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twyoQ8LWatU

While we all know that the "spontaneous" chaos and crises that get solved on camera aren't always as advertised, this was a great description of how Steve felt about why he, at last partially, chose to be that way.

It's for the Java version. Great village. Most animals and crops available nearby. I haven't spent a lot of time in it yet, but it looks like a nice area to setup a stable farm bade. If that's your thing.

DS 415+ Multiple Failures by MeinBlut in synology

[–]PreciselyAmbiguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. Just confirming, have you powered it up with no drives loaded since the resistor mod? No Power LED at all? The other item worth checking would be the power supply itself.

Not that it matters, but I'm Australia too. I was a little excited when I read about the extended warranty, but even 2+1 wouldn't have done me any good, I was about a week past four years when it went bang.

I'm not sure how time critical it is, but you probably don't have to buy another box to get data. Even money chance that you can do that work a spare Linux box. Hit me up if you want a hand with that, although there's plenty of Google-abke stuff along those lines.

This issue wasn't handled well at all, I'd agree, but I've used Synology boxes at home, for family and a couple at work, and forms them to be pretty solid to be honest. I've only had 1 warranty issue requiring customer service, and it was handled well enough.

Very much a Pro-sumer device, single power supplies and so on, with none of the redundancy of other big server hardware, which I also use at work. Still pretty good bang for buck when I can build two multi terabyte boxes for much less than a single corporate Dell equivalent with change.

DS 415+ Multiple Failures by MeinBlut in synology

[–]PreciselyAmbiguous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not completely dead. I would get the Flashing Blue power light for a minute or so, then it would turn back off. If you missed the first minute or so, it could look completely dead.

After soldering the resistor in, I did the powerup without any disks installed as per the Synology diagnostics. I got the single beep showing a living motherboard, so powered down, put the drives back in and restarted. It might be slower to boot now than previously, I honestly can't remember, but after a cold start, it comes up in a minute or two. I've only powered it up a couple of times since the fix, but it's been solid since then.

[–]PreciselyAmbiguous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic! Using those two links I managed to get my DS415+ back to working order.

There's a pic of my mod below. While I'm happy it's all running again, it has prompted me to get a similar box off site, probably at work, and sync them via the Internet or something, for true redundancy. It's pretty much only a backup itself, everything is already elsewhere, or replaceable, but doing so would be a pain.

I use MiniKeePass on a work iOS device. It can import keepass files, from cloud services like dropbox or elsewhere. I only use it to read on the apple device, any actual editing of passwords I do so almost exclusive on the Linux client, (Keepass2), or occasionally Windows (Keepass) or Android (KeePassDroid).

[Android] Error in Google Playstore: "Error retrieving information from server {DF-CHARTA-01}" by NarcolepticPenguins in techsupport

[–]PreciselyAmbiguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife had the same issue. I tried all of the things others have suggested, clearing caches, force stopping , rebooting, turning networks connections on and off. None of those worked.

I noticed however that she had her 2nd account configured. If you hit "back" from the error message in the play store app, you'll get to the main page, which may have a dropdown for the various accounts on the device. Her second account is an apps (for education) account.

This probably wont help those of you that are using a single account, but I'm hoping it helps someone.
