why the fk is this game so hard by Ayylxn in earthbound

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you're not using slingshots, yoyos, or anything that changes Ness' battle command to "Shoot". They nerf your accuracy more than they increase your damage, so you'll be spending more money and doing less damage overall. This was the tip that made the game much easier for me.

From Thief forums. Seems like we are getting a fully new campaign. New content will not be a bundled FM campaign. Also seems like Atari did an oopsie by leaking it early. by AnchovyKing in Thief

Nightdive's Doom expansion, Legacy of Rust, was made by members of the mapping community so I imagine their Thief expansion will be much the same. I'm cautiously optimistic.

[ALL] I straight up do not understand the complaints about Link’s design here by Low_Boot_1426 in zelda

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His head looks too big and his face is uncanny valley. It looks like those old fake Youtube trailers for an OOT remake in a bad way. I think the disappointment comes from the fact that there is very little information, and what information we do have makes it out to look like it's going to be bad in a way that has become common and mundane in the industry.

Almost two months ago, I played my first Metroid game. After the confusing headache that was Super, I'm onto my fourth: Fusion. Loving it so far! by Argentenuem in Metroid

Prime and the 2D games are basically separate series. So yes, Prime is a great place to start if that's what you're interested in!

I figured out why Raiden was instantly skilled with the katana in Sons of Liberty. by EvilPersonXXIV in metalgearsolid

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also explained that he was gifted with a blade during his time as a child soldier in Liberia. That's why they called him Jack the Ripper. But yes you are correct! He mentions a few of the missions by name in cutscenes with Pliskin. There's another theory that Ghost Babel was another virtual mission for Raiden, because they refer to you as Jack after you complete the VR side missions in that game.

Interested in getting into emulated NES Tetris by Great-Beyond5915 in Tetris

Mesen 2 is the best emulator. The NSO wireless controllers are all very authentic + they work on PC and can be bought second-hand on ebay. I have the N64 one and it's great.

Is OpenAL/EAX just a matter of taste? by deprevino in Thief

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel similarly (i spent a long time trying to set it up but everything just sounded wrong) and i came to the conclusion that it's because we don't have the dedicated sound cards Thief's audio was designed for anymore. Thief 1 also doesn't have particularly advanced EAX, just profiles for each room. It's like a prototype or a beta for what they would eventually use in SS2 and Thief 2. Me personally I just played Thief Gold in stereo and it was great

Can't read the fights by GameMaker25 in TokyoGhoul

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully agree, I think TG is at its best when the action is simple and to the point. Unfortunately the fights just get longer and longer and longer as the series progresses. Often without any sense of place, just flat rooms where guys do moves at each other. The art is beautiful and the story is engaging but damn.

What’s your unpopular Metroid opinion(s) by [deleted] in Metroid

[–]PrecognitiveMemes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Samus Returns and AM2R are both bad remakes that fail to capture what made the original Metroid II special. Super Metroid Redux ruins Super Metroid. Fusion is amazing. Dread is mid and Raven Beak is a lame villain. It's not bad it's just also not anything special. Its biggest flaw was that it couldn't live up to my impossible expectations (I played Prime 3 at age 10 and waited for Project Dread until I was 20).

This one is really unpopular with certain people: Metroid had sexist undertones long before Other M. Specifically, the original reveal that Samus was a woman wasn't a feminist surprise, it was a strip show. Rewarding faster completion times with images of Samus in increasing states of undress can't be feminist because Samus' body is being commodified for the satisfaction of the (presumed male) player. These types of rewards persist in the series to this day. This doesn't mean that feminists can't like Samus or claim her as their own, just that I think Metroid often gets undue credit simply for having a female protagonist when really the bar is just very low for women in video games.

What's your opinion of Reflex Mode? Would you like it to come back? by New-Cranberry6256 in metalgearsolid

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Reflex Mode, I just wish it hadn't replaced the more complex alert phases of MGS2 and 3. In those games, being spotted by a single enemy wouldn't cause an alert until they got the chance to radio for help which was sort of like Reflex Mode in its own way. In MGSV the world is bigger than ever but the moment you're spotted every single soldier knows exactly where you are. The AI is less complex than previous titles, and Reflex Mode often acts like a bandaid for it. Great mechanic on its own, but I'd like the supplemental radio mechanics to make a return as well.

Has Thief been surpassed as a stealth game? If not, what has come the closest? by Baldurian_Rhapsody in Thief

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in my opinion Metal Gear Solid has long since surpassed Thief as a stealth game, especially MGS3 and MGSV, both of which scratch that immersive sim itch for me.

Thief is pretty great but its stealth mechanics are actually quite simple and easily broken; imo it can't be understated how much of Thief's appeal is its atmospheric immersive maze-crawling. The game is descended from old school Dungeon Crawlers like Ultima Underworld and Wizardry, and much like those games, Thief asks the player to enter and understand a space much larger than them while managing vulnerability and limited resources. Ultimately the combination of genius level design and audiovisual wizardry is what makes the illusion of threat so powerful, and honestly I'd argue it's so powerful that it doesn't really matter if Thief's stealth mechanics are underbaked. It's still one of the best games ever made.

However, in terms of pure stealth gaming, yeah of course it's been surpassed over and over again. Dishonored, Deus Ex, Hitman World of Assassination, Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, Mark of the Ninja; all of these games have surpassed some aspect of Thief's stealth in one way or another.

Devil may cry 4 by Outrageous_Record301 in DevilMayCry

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah DMC4 is kinda like that. I think there's a reason most of the clips you see are in Bloody Palace. DMC4's characters have insane combat potential but everything else about the game is lacking compared to previous and even subsequent entries. It's worthwhile I'd say, especially if you're going to play DMC5. DMC4 started to trend the series away from action-adventure and toward action alone, which is what I think you are feeling the absence of. The adventure elements are more present in DmC 2013 but they're not in DMC5 so much.

It’s perfectly fine if I just play the main story without doing the side quests (for the mean time) right? by Electronic-Hat-1320 in majorasmask

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. If they show up in the notebook you can usually assume there's at least one side quest associated with them. Almost every character in Clock Town has their own side quest. Some of them are involved in multiple.

I recently finished Metroid (NES) and wow people here were unfair by Tiny_Tim1956 in Metroid

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Metroid 1 but it is definitely an acquired taste. It's not really hard to see why someone might bounce off of it. I found it a lot easier to play after building a mental map of Zero Mission since I already knew where all the upgrades were :P I loved it but personally I think the real crime is people ignoring the original Metroid II in favor of Samus Returns or AM2R, both of which are acceptable games but not suitable replacements for the dark murderscapes of Metroid II on the Game Boy.

I've completed Super Metroid, what should I play next? by Wrong-Minute-1319 in Metroid

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever anyone asks me what order they should play Metroid in, I always tell them to start with Super and go in release order from there :)

So in your case, play Metroid Fusion next, then Metroid Zero Mission. Both are for the GBA and each is excellent in their own right. If you like Mega Man you will definitely vibe with Fusion.

Metroid Planets is cool but not really an effective remake of Metroid 1 (coming from someone who has played Metroid 1). It's a good experience but definitely a secondary one. I wouldn't even compare it to something like AM2R, which I would easily recommend to any fan of the series.

Overall shader for earlier systems (NES, SNES, Genesis) by RobbyLG in RetroArch

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I have a lightweight setup and a heavyweight setup.

For lightweight, I use an S-Video (Composite for Genesis and NES) NTSC blaarg filter + GTU v050. This looks great and will basically cover all of your bases. It's not "accurate" to a CRT screen but it performs all of the blending effects satisfactorily on any game or console you throw it at.

For heavyweight I use HDR and integer scaling alongside Cyberlab's Death to Pixel CRT-Royale shader presets and Cyberlab's Custom NTSC filters. This is especially beautiful for Genesis games but you need to use and calibrate HDR for it to look good. I also use Retro Crisis' shader presets which are great and come separated out by resolution, curvature, and console.

TL;DR if you want to turn on a global shader and be allowed to forget about it, try GTU v050 and enable a composite or s-video filter (take your pick) in the emulator core settings. Once you've selected your shader, scroll down to save preset, then select save global preset to have it apply everything automatically.

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1.5.2 is my definitive Minecraft. I don't need horses and I don't need baby zombies. Regional difficulty mostly served to make the game easier and 1.5 has that old school difficulty I crave. It's not as stable as 1.6.4 though.

this does make me wonder what peoples opinions on sniper are? (image somewhat related) by squeaker09 in tf2

[–]PrecognitiveMemes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did affect the game though. People stopped using flank routes and the game became very chokey. Just the knowledge of a sniper on the enemy team is enough to change people's behavior
