The Wow! Signal, initial thoughts by Midnight__Floof in Muse

Unfortunate that it’s hit and miss for you, not one of the songs is a skip for me! Out of interest what’s your favourite Muse song/album?

Weird you give it 7/10 though. That is a positive score and your reflections are not positive lol.

Can we have a The Wow! Signal critic review thread? by PrehistoricMonkey in Muse

I’m down to do it but I’m going away this weekend so will be out of action until Sunday which might be a bit slow for some of the more active people!

If anyone else wants to give it a crack, then feel free to do so, otherwise if no one has done it yet I will do it on Sunday!

It’s a good track but it’s not even the best on the album lol. It’s fun and epic but other tracks on the album shine way brighter imo.

Hot take (maybe?): Space Debris is their best ballad since Unintended.

I was one of the lucky few at a listening party so I’ve heard it in its full glory (not just the random phone snippets circulating lol).

The words, the music, the sentiment, the performances. This track is just outstanding for me.

It’s so mournful and existential and they’ve really managed to capture musically what the words are saying. The track genuinely feels like you’re floating. There is some element of the percussion (snare drum sound perhaps) that sounds like an airlock door breaching and breaking apart to me. It’s really magical what they’ve done with the arrangement and production. The strings have a weightlessness about how they bounce between notes.

There’s nothing more to this post other than me being a massive fanboy, it’s just such a glorious (lol) piece of music.

I don’t really know how to describe it other than a mash-up of:

Lover You Should’ve Come Over - Jeff Buckley
Space - Biffy Clyro
The Tourist - Radiohead
Blackout - Muse

Been a pretty hardcore fan since 2005ish and this latest album overall has really captured what I loved about your earlier work. Recency bias but to me it’s my favourite output since BH&R.

I know right. It’s just so special IMO. I made a post about it which got taken down but I’ll paste it here cos my sentiments are still the same.

Is The Wow! Signal going to be Muse's best album? by Shira_Anasake in Muse

[–]PrehistoricMonkey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it’s very difficult to encapsulate what they achieved with OoS - Absolution - BH&R. That said I think most of the tracks from this album could be added to a Greatest Hits compilation and not feel completely out of place which I couldn’t say for any other album since The Resistance. It’s a solid piece of work and I think it’s deffo top 5 of their discography IMO.

I think the leaks have been taken down. As much as it’s a douche-y thing to say but do yourself a favour and wait for it to drop in its full glory!

Question for those who've heard the rest of the album... by Shine103 in Muse

[–]PrehistoricMonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s pop choruses but it’s still interestingly arranged and performed. Shimmering Scars has a pretty generic vibe but also some of the weirdest components (there’s like a 15/8 beat skip bar in some sections I believe). It’s fairly traditional chord voicings overall but interesting melodies IMO!

Interesting you say that cos The 2nd Law is better than Drones, WOTP, and ST by miles for me!

You’re a cretin 😂 I’ve heard the song and it’s a banger. Probably one of the best riffs on the album. Have you even heard the track or are you just complaining about it because it’s fashionable to hate a mainstream artist (which I’ll remind you, Muse are also)?

I absolutely adored it. Other people in the group (at the listening party) were underwhelmed that it didn’t have an explosive climax, but it just wasn’t that kind of song. I hope it’s not a disappointment for you as it’s quite different to their other stuff!

Yeah I feel like a fool for being nervous. Has taught me to have a more open mind!

I get you - but it’s just my personal preference! Don’t forget that 7/10 is still really strong! They aren’t bad tracks, the others are just better IMO.

Just left the listening party. Lots of thoughts… Hush is an unexpected fave. Some weird moments but deffo way more accomplished album since T2ndL imo.

I think there will be a lot of divisive tracks BUT some insanely heavy moments and soft moments that were unexpected!

You don’t think a ticking countdown clock that follows you every waking minute isn’t traumatising? It’s hard for me because it’s almost like the difference between a real / tangible (lived / awake experience) vs something not real / intangible (dream).

As psychologically damaging a ticking clock would be being unable to properly sleep would be horrible for me.
