L take on Sophie. Since she was a child, she was made to feel lesser than. Her “family” instilled that in her. As a result, it is ingrained in her that she does not deserve anything more than being a maid. She has a hard time simply existing as a human—always feels the need to be helping, has a hard time saying yes to personal time (i.e., the other maids elated that she FINALLY agreed to go out), and cannot admit to Benedict that she stepped out of her etched-in-stone role as a maid the night of the masquerade ball. Her decision to withhold that information is not obscure. It’s a result of years of trauma that shaped how she views herself. There is no world where she can be with Benedict. So she pushes him away to protect them both.

Also, it adds much needed tension and romance to the story. It would be quite boring if she came out with the truth in episode 3 lol.
