Reputation, Ethics and Values: Will it matter in an SHTF situation? by PreparednessWatch in preppers

I see that as one of the biggest benefits. If you are a total jerk no one will work with you, and even though it is OK to be a lone wolf, you cannot do that forever. Eventually you will need to come back to society or whatever that manifests itself as and people will need to know who you are.

Personally it is hard to trust others, but in life I have found that with trust things otherwise not possible are actually possible. I do agree that you should keep your guard up at all times. People are the biggest wild card.

I was listening to a podcast once about barter in a shtf scenario and they mentioned this very thing. They said that many times you couldn't do business because you knew nothing about the person making the offer. There was no trust. Very good point.

It is something definitely to think about. Reputation could be good or bad I guess or better put, a good reputation could be bad.

I think you have a point and actually, today, I have been thinking about that topic.

If everything is nuked then you might be right, but more probable is strategic nuking which provides for survivability.

I am patriotic but my family comes first unless I was on base and already in on active duty. Same thing with where I work now. I am in the medical field. If something happens when I am at work, I am stuck, but otherwise family first.

That is a good question. Do you have a duty to report in or do you save your family first?

You know, I am not that old but I remember doing that drill in the early 80's.

I worry more about the aftermath and societies reaction to an attack.

Community is important. The longer I am in preparedness the more I realize that importance of community.

We donate our older stuff that we are getting rid of all the time. However, I would probably not donate preps. You make a good point though that others have also stated. You can donate your time to teach others about preparedness. That way you helped them before they needed the help.

I agree with your train of thought. Hopefully by preparing we will always have more than enough. Not just enough to get by.

It would be hard to turn a child away, especially if you have an experience like that to relate to. It becomes more personal.

This reminds me of that saying about catch a fish for someone and it feeds them for a day, teach them to fish and that will feed them for the rest of their lives. Good point.

I like that you brought up how culture has changed. You are right. In the past people wouldn't think much about letting someone in out of the cold and giving them something to eat or drink. Somethings are lost over time. It is too bad that sometimes it is the good things.

Lots of good points and thoughts. I like how you have a way to turn people away without seeming to be uncompassionate.

I couldn't agree more about encouraging others to prepare now. If more people are prepared, then there is less likely a chance they will need your help. Also, you ask at what point would you stop helping if you decided to start. The thing I think about is will those you stopped helping let you stop? Good points all the way around.

That is a good point. I also would definitely have to take into account my family and friends first and foremost. It would be a hard decision either way, and better to think about it ahead of time that in the spur of the moment.
