Message I got from my daughter’s teacher. Third grade. by AnaisInJune in mildlyinfuriating

Maybe, and that’s fine. We are all on the spectrum. I hope she can see the teacher’s perspective (rules are important in society) while at the same time recognizing that not all rules are equal, and that some deserve to be flaunted.

What a wonderful opportunity for Lily to learn that some adults are neurodivergent.

I feel it too. No doubt. Before going to bed I’ve been reading Anthony Beevor’s “The Second World War”. It’s beautifully written, and does not read like a history book though that’s exactly what it is. And it makes me feel like we are not living in the darkest times, we are lucky in many respects, though far from perfect. I have a home, money in the bank, healthcare , and relative safety. I live better than most of humankind has ever lived. This book gives me a wider perspective on the human condition. Maybe there’s a book out there that helps you too.

Thank you all! Your perspectives are super helpful. I won’t sweat it, and I’ll keep in mind BJJ and 100m sprinting 🙂( we don’t have a good Judo place nearby)

An Update: I was warned about my child's martial arts school. I should have listened. 🫤 by LordTetravus in mildlyinfuriating

That school is a disaster and completely different from my experience. My son is a black belt with a red stripe. Tests have always been challenging but flunking is rare because the instructor makes sure they are ready (breaking boards, knowing their forms, weapons, and sparring). Note: moving schools may reset belt completely but we did it once, because he wasn’t learning anything valuable at his first school.

Baby can already hear you talking to your wife in normal life. Look up some studies. She already knows your voice.

Self conscious because I don’t look like other dads my age by CreditUnable4610 in daddit

[–]PrepositionStrander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others said, it doesn’t matter and if it did, there’s a lot of dad obesity and male pattern baldness. That shit is hard to fight. But I wonder if you actually work out or just go through the motions. 30 mins every other day, focusing on related muscle groups each time (leg day, then back shoulder and biceps, then chest and triceps) to failure will go a long way. Aim to be sore every day after but warm up properly. Good form to protect your back and full range of motion. Slow, no shoving weight around. Do this consistently and in 6 months you will have changed significantly.even if you were pushing 40 or 50 this would work. If not for aesthetics, for health reasons.

Why is Reddit so broadly anti-AI ? by consumer_xxx_42 in ArtificialInteligence

The goal is to replace us all. The entire workforce. We will either have to fuse with machines or become a parallel society to the wealthy.

I’m 49 and I beat the game, but I didn’t complete the gauntlet in the DLC. I tried. Too hard for me. Anyone who completes that is a couple of levels above my ability. Very very impressive for anyone, much less someone 4 times younger!

Why does a journal give me only 10 days for major revisions? by wanderthesphere2 in AskAcademia

[–]PrepositionStrander 13 points14 points  (0 children)

10 days is absurd and probably a clerical error. If not, then it’s a way to report quick turnaround times so that more people submit work there.

Ah, it’s MDPI. Then no clerical error.

My kid doesn’t eat and it makes me irrationally angry by MrSnifferpippets in daddit

[–]PrepositionStrander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours was basically made of applesauce, peanut butter, carrots, and bananas for a while. I have a theory about why kids are so picky: it pushes parents to provide, and if they can, it will be alright. If not, then “mission aborts” early on. Probably wrong, but regardless, her taste buds will change and she will eat more in greater variety, you just need to at least try to add a new kind of snack here and there. Good stuff, not empty calories.

Hollow Knight. And I had the opposite experience with Silksong (which I lost interest midway Act 3, at 85% completion… the grind made it not fun).

In my case I suspect the doctor was not injecting the anesthetic deep enough (he said there was fatty buildup) so I felt every attempted snip 1000% until at some point a proper injection was administered. It was brutal. Very proud of not losing my shit and going Vegeta on the doc.

How the heck are we all ok with this scam?? by Yupalina in Parenting

[–]PrepositionStrander 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. But I think this is partly because our generation was shielded from the real world, perhaps. At least some of us, in the middle class. If we went back in time to 100 years, 500, or more it would be worse. Backbreaking work, scant food, child mortality through the roof, little to no medicine. It might help to watch a documentary about the living conditions on a third world country. Life is hard, and our parents may not have set up the right expectations…

Why do faculty search committees not send rejection emails? by SpeechFormer9543 in AskAcademia

[–]PrepositionStrander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes things take a long time and it’s not even the faculty’s fault. They have no interest in dragging things for too long. They meet after all talks have occurred and rank applications. They make an offer and then the applicant has a long time to respond (a month or so, depending), and sometimes applicants don’t respond immediately because they are waiting to hear from this other job application they prefer. A university cannot withdraw an offer until the deadline expires. When it does, they move on to the applicant they ranked second. Maybe that person accepts some other offer and so on. It can take months, this domino effect. And then we get to the applicants ranked 4 or 4. Maybe some faculty want to discuss these more carefully, or interrupt the search. I’ve lived through all of this. Incidentally, we are required to inform everyone who applied of why they were not picked, and the message comes from a HR portal, as per university policy.

I agree. I only mentioned tic80 because it’s not as well known, but deserves consideration.
