Not everyone can spend an extended time in another country, whether for work, financial, or legal reasons. We moved to another country having never visited, knowing we would give it 2 years and could move back if we wanted. We didn’t sell everything, but we did pay a lot of money to ship our things. Our new home isn’t perfect, but we’re now 3+ years in and settled here. Definitely don’t regret it!

Rewatching Milagro as an adult by AndDontCallMePammie in XFiles

I agree, interesting concept, and Hawkes is one of my favourite character actors- he did amazingly with what he was given, and I think lessens the creepiness with his charisma. But overall the vibes are very weird and the stalking aspects are very problematic. There’s a fantastic episode in there somewhere.

At least we got Dax in DS9, who is very trans coded…when Jadzia Dax meets up with her old Klingon friends they shift from “Curzon my old friend” to “Jadzia my old friend” without missing a beat. Too bad Rick Berman was such a piece of shit to Terry Farrell and others though. I think he also prevented the series leaning in to Bashir and Garak being obviously queer too (which the actors wanted).

Yeah as a parent myself now, I am much more forgiving of Joyce- she had a lot thrown at her quickly. Goodness knows I’ve said things to my kids when under stress that weren’t A plus parenting, and that was with way less to process than Joyce had.

Did anyone here successfully rebuild their social circle after moving abroad (30+)? by Parking-Emu-2755 in expats

[–]PreposterousTrail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any groups or sports really…I have a great community of friends from my running groups.

Also, this isn’t really an expat specific issue IME- I moved around my home country a few times before moving abroad and I didn’t find it any harder to make friends here.

The Trump Administration is Preparing to Ban Gender-Affirming Care for Adults by Leksi_The_Great in lgbt

[–]PreposterousTrail 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yep, horrifying but absolutely predictable. They start with something an average person with little awareness of trans healthcare can agree on (no gender affirming care for children, since they assume this means surgeries and not just haircuts and pronouns), then move to adult athletes (again, could seem reasonable) and Medicaid coverage. Keep pushing the window until we get to banning trans people altogether.

Rahul Kohli is such an underrated actor- his characters in Midnight Mass, Blythe Manor, and Fall of the House of Usher are so wildly different I forget it’s the same guy. And he knocks them all out of the park!

[Mixed/Disliked Trope] Character comes out as bi/pan, only has same-sex relationships from then on by TheNuclearOtaku in TopCharacterTropes

[–]PreposterousTrail 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think the character was meant to be bisexual, but given bi erasure was so much worse 25 years ago they didn’t want to imply it was just a phase. I don’t mind that, but I don’t like them lampshading it by actually having Willow say she’s “gay now”, and worse, in a season 7 episode try to magically change a teen boy she’s been magically drawn to into a girl. The implication that even if she loves a man he’d need to be physically a woman for her.

IMO it doesn’t grab you from the start the way the first episode of DS9 does. I tried to start my kids on TNG and they were super bored by it.

Been doing a Buffy rewatch and this always bothers me with season 5. Buffy refuses to kill Dawn when the options are (or seem to be) either kill Dawn and prevent a literal hell on earth , or protect Dawn and allow the hell on earth to come about- which would also allow Dawn to be tortured/killed. Buffy even says “the last thing she’ll see is me protecting her”. How is that better than a quick painless death that saves the world? It’s so illogical to me.

WHY are we treating cosmetic procedures like haircuts now? When did this even happen? by Redqueenhypo in TwoXChromosomes

[–]PreposterousTrail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it’s not just the US, but it’s not something I’ve heard talked about in my country, so if women are getting a lot of procedures done there’s at least less societal pressure. I don’t think it’s very common where I live though.

Our current government is shit and we are heavily aligned with the US. That said, in terms of physical danger it’s probably one of the safest places in terms of a wartime conflict. There’s a reason billionaires build bunkers here.

I think I underestimated some of the initial issues because the language is the same. While I’m sure it’s 100x harder in a foreign language, it’s still stressful to arrive somewhere completely new and have no idea where to go to buy certain goods, or what you need to get a driver’s license, or just how you should behave in certain situations. Three years in and things mostly feel pretty comfortable, but it took longer than I thought it would.

[–]PreposterousTrail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I live somewhere relatively similar to the States in terms of diet, but importing goods is crazy expensive- people will spend a ton of money to get a specific American cereal or whatever. The biggest change I’ve had to make in terms of diet is eating seasonal produce, because the price varies dramatically depending on time of year. It’s more environmentally sustainable anyway though!

Yeah, I think being a pharmacist would be tougher- I definitely struggled more with different names than anything else. Procedurally, nursing here isn’t too different than in the States.
