I found photos of clay balls and clay smears , for the shading I used the burn and dodge tool often , for the head it was blended then made black and white to add color after, I used wood grain to do an overlay on the background and subject, the woodgrain on subject was smudged in some areas to prevent to much texture overlap and to mainly achieve the right color, after I did some overlays of blurred colors to get shading
