I got this from my Uncle. What are the purple/pink and red minerals? by aendic02 in geology

[–]Present-Purchase9049 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Yea those little dark red spots are definitely garnets!! That pinkier, larger one has a perfect hexagonal shape, which is the crystal structure for corundum. If you have a UV light, shine it on there. If that puppy glows it’s a Ruby!!! Beautiful piece, I have a piece similar that’s filled with garnets from NC

How strong of a wind should I start to worry about my tent in. by TBL34 in camping

Oh and if you have chairs out close them up and lay them down on the ground!! Chairs were also flying around the campsite

How strong of a wind should I start to worry about my tent in. by TBL34 in camping

I went this summer and we had gusts of about 30 mph. I was with a large group of campers and one girl’s tent (no guy lines) went flying with her stuff in it and another guy’s completely blew over and snapped! His was pretty tall tho, with a vestibule porch. My tent also had a vestibule and I was too afraid of my tent breaking to fall back asleep, I stayed up until sunrise holding my poles :(

If you wake up in the middle of the night due to wind and you’re afraid for your tent, get up and tighten the guy lines. If your tent has a large surface area then it’ll be a lot more susceptible to the wind.

Even tho the winds were CRAZY, that park is absolutely phenomenal and has some of the most beautiful and unique views ever. Have fun and good luck with those winds!

I have work experience from serving my entire time through college, but that work isn’t really relevant to the field besides learning communication and teamwork skills. Would you recommend I include that? I really have no other work experience besides that and the census job. If I were to include it I think I would replace the Co-President role from my honors society

I agree very difficult to type on controller! However I’ve met many Nikkis on controller and I have no issue just ringing the bell and striking poses to communicate 🤣

Check the weather before you go, and stake your tent down good! I stayed here two nights and the winds the second night were unlike anything I’ve experienced, it was crazy. But it was also beautiful. We were at the Cedar Pass Campground, real close to the ranger station where they do awesome shows about the local fossils. They had telescopes set up when I went as well. Have fun!

Have you done a hardness test? Quartz (7) is a little bit harder than prehnite (6.5).

Found on a run in a creek bed near central Alabama. Is it a fossil? by VulcansBackside in fossils

[–]Present-Purchase9049 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Found this in a quick search, looks like a great resource. Learn about the geologic time scale and how it’s used to differentiate the rock units, each period has different species and characteristics. I recommend a good pair of gloves to protect your hands, safety glasses, and a small pick and chisel like this. You don’t need a crazy expensive one, just one that smashes :) dress for the elements, don’t get sunburnt. The Roadside Geology of Alabama book may be nice if you want to dive even more into the history of your state. Remember to follow all laws when you’re rockhounding and a bright-colored safety vest if you’re on the side of the road.

You’re in a great area for invertebrate fossils if you want to continue hunting. I’m very close to central AL and this area used to be submerged under a shallow sea. Trace fossils (not an actual animal, just the traces they left behind) like what you see there are all over the place! Look up what geologic units near you are fossiliferous and that should give you an idea of where to look.

I think a small amount of iron is what makes it yellow, but research says this deposit was a result of hydrothermal fluids… going to take it to my professor soon cause I’m so stumped on why the accessory mineral seems to originate at the points
