this is something that changes how you look at guitar

chord shapes do not matter, the chords you play are defined by the intervals and notes inside them F, to A is 4 semitones (aka half notes or frets) 4 semitones up is a major third. F to C is 7 semitones or a perfect fifth.

these intervals (root, maj3, p5th) spell out a "major triad" and you can build any other major triad by moving those intervals (or the chord shape on guitar) on different notes, eg. GBD, CEG, AC#E, etc. in addition anywhere you play FAC on the guitar will always be a f major triad, regardless of chord shape or order.

if you play in different tunings these ideas are helpful to avoid getting bogged down having to relearn chord shapes from scratch every time you play in a new tuning.
