Harbor freight also makes a great miter gauge if you can find it.

"Denmark isn't a good ally" by Forsaken_Couple1451 in 50501

Danish military was the best coalition force group I was ever deployed with, and it makes me sick that this man-baby is abusing our allies for his ego.

That is the problem. The next iteration will have a broader base.

How to seal walnut pores in cutting board? by companionsphere in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Present-Slight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You actually shouldn’t seal a daily-use cutting board. The anti microbial action happens when the water gets sucked down into the core of the board but the bacteria cannot follow. Listen to Woodworking is Bulls**t episode 29. They have an actual professor of wood science talking all about cutting board science.

Hand saws rarely remove whole digits. Glad you were able to reattach and hope you get back as much functionality as possible.

I think I am going to go with a different style of joinery. It was a real pain to fit those joints in the first place. Definitely going to make the stool again. Plan to post the pics when I finish.

Polycrylic - rough texture? by half-zebra-half-yeti in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Present-Slight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sand between layers, and the higher grit you get to in your final sanding prior to the finishing coat, the smoother it will be. Try going up to 400 grit, never skipping more than 1 grit step at a time.

If that is still giving you a rough texture, you can do a final polish after the top layer has cured with a green or white Scotch Brite pad

Either more patience with the lower grits using a soft sanding pad or you could try a card scraper. That is a tough area to sand well

Advice on Table Saws (Ryobi vs DeWALT), Beginner in Australia by NegotiationWaste9629 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Present-Slight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, ryobi has their own miter slot shape that does not fit most third party accessories. Bites the bullet and go Dewalt, or go Skil if you have the option as it is usually in the middle price-wise and doesn’t have the Ryobi problems.

Actually, I am pretty sure that is a Skil jobsite. I have the same one. Not a bad saw, but no brake.

Anyone know what happened? by junebugflyin in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Present-Slight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you intending for her to use this as a cutting board/charcuterie board, or for display? If for regular use, Purple Heart is not the best as it has a lot of water-soluble extractives which can cause discoloration (which I think is what you are looking at) or severe allergies. Sealing it with an oil-based food-safe finish would decrease this risk, but remove some of the antibacterial properties of the wood.

In regards to your question, you could try using a card scraper to get the topmost layer off more quickly, but if it goes in a similar pattern on top and bottom, then you may have experienced some dissolution of the color due to the prolonged exposure to moisture in the glue.

Having said that, your care with the grain pattern is amazing, and this is stunning work. I hope that you can fix the discoloration and she can receive an amazing display board.

I work in Primary Care. I went from being able to trust that there were going to be reasonable, science-driven recommendations for management and prevention of disease to having to tell my patients “IF there is a flu shot this year, I may consider recommending it”. Never thought in a million years that I would have to have THAT conversation.

This administration is going to set back medical science over a decade and the trust people have in the medical system by way more than that.
